Inspiration

RVA Health Scope was inspired by the growing need to address healthcare disparities in Richmond. We were motivated by the stark differences in health outcomes across neighborhoods and the personal stories of residents, like Kellan's, whose families face challenges accessing timely healthcare or diagnoses. We also wanted to create a platform that would not only raise awareness but provide tangible resources to help individuals make informed decisions about their health. The words of Derek Chapman from the VCU Center on Society and Health, about addressing multiple factors comprehensively, served as a core guiding principle for our project.

What it does

RVA Health Scope is a website designed to raise awareness about healthcare disparities in the Richmond area. It provides a comprehensive overview of chronic diseases, their prevalence in the region, and the socioeconomic factors that contribute to health disparities. The site offers statistical data, personal stories, and an interactive chatbot that gives users access to reliable health information, helping them take proactive steps toward better health. It also features data visualizations to showcase trends and disparities in health outcomes across the Richmond region.

How we built it

We built RVA Health Scope using a combination of data visualization tools, interactive web design, and user-centered content. We gathered data from various health reports, including those from the Virginia Department of Health, and integrated them into interactive graphs using tools like PowerBI. The chatbot was trained on healthcare data to provide users with general guidance on chronic diseases and preventive measures using Zapier. The website was designed with accessibility in mind, ensuring that users with different levels of digital literacy could easily navigate the platform using Wix.

Challenges we ran into

One of the main challenges we faced was ensuring the accessibility and simplicity of the website for all users, especially those in underserved communities with lower digital literacy. We had to balance the complexity of the data with an easy-to-understand presentation. Additionally, integrating the chatbot with accurate, actionable information while ensuring its responses were helpful but not diagnostic posed a challenge. Another challenge was ensuring that the data privacy and security measures were robust, as the platform does not require users to provide personal information but still needed to be trusted.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re proud of how RVA Health Scope empowers Richmond residents to take charge of their health by providing easy access to essential information on chronic diseases. The interactive data visualizations and chatbot are key features that make the platform user-friendly. We’re also proud that we successfully collaborated with local health organizations to incorporate real-life data, making the platform both meaningful and impactful. Most importantly, we are proud of the potential impact RVA Health Scope can have in helping to reduce health disparities in the Richmond area.

What we learned

We learned the importance of creating a platform that balances technical sophistication with ease of use. It’s crucial to present complex health data in a way that’s accessible to everyone, regardless of their background or technical skills. We also learned that healthcare disparities are not just a matter of access to care but are deeply tied to socioeconomic and geographic factors. This project reinforced our belief in the power of education and awareness as key tools in addressing these disparities.

What's next for RVA Health Scope

Moving forward, we plan to expand RVA Health Scope by incorporating more localized data, working with additional healthcare organizations to keep the information current, and enhancing the chatbot with more personalized guidance based on user inputs. We also hope to partner with local community groups and clinics to promote the website and ensure it reaches those who need it most. In the future, we envision a more comprehensive version of RVA Health Scope that can offer additional resources like health screenings, telehealth options, and direct connections to local healthcare providers.
