How we built it## Inspiration
The idea for RunwayInk came from watching a close friend who designs costumes and characters. She draws beautiful art on paper, but turning those flat sketches into 3D models takes way too much time and effort. I wanted to build something that makes her life easier by letting her see her designs in 3D instantly. When I told her about an idea where she could just draw her paper art straight into a 3D digital space, she absolutely loved it. That proved to me that fashion designers should be working in 3D space, not just on flat screens.
What it does
RunwayInk is a mixed reality app that changes how fashion designers work. Using the Logitech MX Ink pen, designers can draw, drape, and pin virtual fabrics right onto a life-sized 3D mannequin in their own room. Then, with a simple UI interaction, the mannequin actually walks forward, letting the designer see exactly how the clothes look and move in real life.
How I plan to build it
I am building RunwayInk to fully integrate the Logitech MX Ink because its precise tracking and pressure sensitivity make it feel just like a real pen. The app will read the pen strokes and instantly turn them into 3D shapes and fabrics right in the Quest 3's passthrough environment.
Anticipated Challenges
My biggest challenge will be making 3D drawing feel as natural and easy as 2D drawing. I need to make sure the pen strokes wrap around the 3D mannequin smoothly without glitching or lagging. Also, making the virtual fabric look realistic and move naturally using the hardware limits of the Meta Quest 3 will take careful testing and optimization.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Even though this is just an idea right now, I am really proud of the workflow I have designed. I figured out how to skip the complicated menus of standard 3D software and use simple, intuitive VR tools instead—like physically flipping the pen to erase a mistake. Pitching this workflow to an actual fashion designer and seeing her get excited was a huge win for me.
What I learned
During my research, I learned how frustrating the current process is for fashion designers who have to jump between different software programs. I also learned a lot about the hardware limits of the Meta Quest 3 and how the Logitech MX Ink can be used to recreate the natural feeling of drawing on paper.
What's next for RunwayInk
My next step is building the first working prototype. I will start by getting the MX Ink drawing mechanics working perfectly on a basic mannequin. Once the drawing feels right, I will move on to adding the walking animations and fabric physics.
