RunRealm Project Story
Inspiration
My friends and I often found our runs a bit monotonous, even with music. We wished for something more engaging than just tracking miles. This led to a simple question: "What if running could be a game?"
This idea sparked RunRealm. We envisioned a platform where our daily runs would contribute to something bigger, transforming our neighborhood into a battleground for territory. We saw a clear gap for a gamified fitness experience that combined competition with the physical act of running.
What it does
RunRealm is a mobile-first web application that turns outdoor running into an immersive territory conquest game. Here's how it works:
- GPS Tracking: My GPS tracks my movement live on Google Maps.
- Territory Claiming: Completing a closed running loop converts that route into a permanent polygon, claiming land on the map.
- Strategic Gameplay: It's not just fitness; it's about strategy, social competition, and expanding my realm.
- Solo & Squad Play: I can run solo to build my personal empire or team up with friends in squads for large-scale territory wars.
- AI Features: The app includes AI-generated missions, lore for real-world landmarks, and cinematic AI battle summaries.
Every run becomes an adventure, designed to make fitness engaging and competitive.
How we built it
We built RunRealm entirely using medo.dev, which proved to be an exceptional development platform. It allowed us to bring this complex vision to life with incredible efficiency, truly embodying a "no coding" approach for much of the heavy lifting.
The core of RunRealm relies on integrating several Google Cloud APIs:
- JavaScript Maps: For displaying and interacting with the map.
- Scraper: For gathering relevant data.
- Geocoding Location API: For precise location data.
- Geocoding Places API: For enriching the map with real-world points of interest.
medo.dev seamlessly handled the integration of these powerful tools, making what could have been a daunting technical challenge surprisingly straightforward.
Challenges we ran into
We initially anticipated significant challenges, especially with integrating multiple Google Cloud APIs. Typically, managing these complex integrations and ensuring they work harmoniously can be a major hurdle. However, thanks to medo.dev, many of these potential problems were mitigated.
The platform streamlined the process, allowing us to focus more on the game mechanics and user experience rather than getting bogged down in intricate API coding. Our main challenge then shifted to creatively leveraging these APIs to build a truly unique and engaging gameplay experience, ensuring smooth performance and accurate territory mapping despite the real-world complexities of GPS data.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I'm incredibly proud of several key accomplishments:
- Personal Usefulness: We've created something my friends and I genuinely use and enjoy daily. RunRealm helps us stay fit by gamifying our running experience.
- Social & Competitive: We've built a platform where we can run with friends, form squads, and compete in a way that makes exercise exciting and strategic.
- Tangible Progress: Seeing our claimed territories expand on the map, knowing that each run contributes to our collective empire, is a truly satisfying accomplishment.
It's rewarding to know that we've made fitness more engaging for ourselves and, hopefully, for many others.
What we learned
Building RunRealm taught me the immense power of platforms like medo.dev in accelerating development and overcoming technical complexities. It showed me that innovative ideas don't always require deep coding expertise to come to fruition.
I also gained a deeper understanding of how to blend physical activity with digital gameplay, recognizing the importance of clear, immediate feedback and compelling incentives for user engagement. Most importantly, I learned that turning a personal frustration (boredom during runs) into a creative solution can lead to a truly impactful and enjoyable product.
What's next for RunRealm
Our next major goal for RunRealm is to expand its reach significantly.
We are working towards making the application available on the Play Store and App Store. This will allow a much wider audience to discover and join the RunRealm community, transforming their runs into epic adventures. We believe that bringing RunRealm to native mobile app stores will be the best way to grow our player base and solidify its position as a leading gamified fitness experience.
