Inspiration

The 2026 browsing experience is riddled with AI results, from using generative AI in day-to-day life to depending on chatbots to generate code. We wanted to bring back the 2016 nostalgia of how the internet used to be through our project.

What it does

This browser extension brings the user back to 2016 through a number of unique features, including but not limited to:

  • removing search results after 2016
  • changing the UI of ChatGPT to look like Stack Overflow
  • removing the AI overview from Google
  • adding an "I'm Feeling Lucky" button to explore new parts of the internet
  • changing Zoom to Skype
  • replacing Triple T images with a Nyan Cat
  • removing Shorts from Youtube

How we built it

We used JavaScript, CSS, and HTML to create a browser extension that can be accessed on any device through Google Chrome.

Challenges we ran into

One challenge we ran into was formatting the ChatGPT UI to look like Stack Overflow because we had to incorporate several elements simultaneously in such a way that would make the UI immediately recognizable.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of how many features we were able to incorporate in such a short time frame to maximize the impact our project would make on the internet as a whole.

What we learned

We learned how to work as a team by brainstorming ideas for the different features and each working on a few on our own so that we could build the overall project in 24 hours.

What's next for #RunItBack

We hope to publish our Chrome extension in order to reach a wider audience. We also want to continue expanding on our features over time, so we can humanize the internet and bring back the fun energy of 2016.
