Inspiration

Mosaic was inspired by the financial challenges many women face when dealing with unfamiliar debt, damaged credit, financial control, or accounts opened without their knowledge. Credit reports are often difficult to understand, especially when someone is already under stress. We wanted to create a tool that gives women clarity, confidence, and control over their financial next steps instead of making decisions for them.

What it does

Mosaic turns a credit report into a guided review experience. It highlights important changes, explains unfamiliar accounts in plain language, helps users decide whether a change is recognized or suspicious, and creates editable dispute-letter drafts when needed. Mosaic’s chatbot understands the difference between general questions, credit-report questions, and requests to create a letter. It never sends anything automatically, so users can review every fact before taking action.

How we built it

We built Mosaic as a SwiftUI iPhone application with Auth0 authentication, on-device credit-report processing, PDF extraction, sensitive-data redaction, and a structured workflow for reviewing report changes. We used Gemini and Backboard to power the conversational assistant, explain report changes, recommend next steps, and prepare reviewable letter drafts. The app connects each draft to the relevant report change, account information, and source page while keeping the user in control of the final decision.

Challenges we ran into

One of our biggest challenges was working with messy and inconsistent credit-report data while still presenting the information clearly. We also had to make sure the AI did not invent balances, account details, or legal conclusions. Building a safe workflow required careful privacy boundaries, redaction, authentication, human approval steps, and clear messaging that Mosaic is not automatically submitting disputes. We also worked through duplicate draft creation, chatbot intent recognition, state synchronization, and making sure the Home screen accurately reflected the user’s progress.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that Mosaic does more than display credit-report information—it helps users understand what changed and organize a safe next step. We built a working flow from report review to classification to editable letter generation. We are especially proud of the chatbot’s ability to separate general questions from Mosaic-specific credit-report tasks, the duplicate-draft protection, the review-count updates, and the rule that nothing is sent without the user’s approval.

What we learned

We learned that responsible AI requires more than generating a helpful response. It requires strong privacy protections, accurate context, transparent limitations, and meaningful human control. We also learned how important it is to design for people who may be stressed or overwhelmed. Clear language, small guided decisions, source-linked information, and reviewable drafts can make a complicated financial process feel much more manageable.

What's next for Mosaic App

Next, we want to improve credit-report extraction across more report formats, support stronger source citations, add more educational guidance, and make the assistant better at recognizing different financial situations. We also want to expand Mosaic’s support for people experiencing financial abuse or coercive control by adding safer recovery resources, customizable checklists, and optional connections to trusted nonprofit and financial-support organizations. Our long-term goal is to make Mosaic a privacy-first financial recovery companion that helps women protect their credit, understand their options, and move forward with confidence.
