Inspiration
We wanted to create a simple choice-based game to explore the state of society and humanity's relationship with the environment.
What it does
The player is tasked with the job of managing three crucial resources, the economy, the environment, and preventing society from falling apart. You also must keep a good public image, at risk of your higher-ups making decisions for you. You are prompted every turn with a yes-no decision regarding some event or natural disaster, and your resources are affected in various ways based on those decisions you make.
How we built it
We used Java, JavaFX, Maven, FXML as our main tools to design and allow the user to interact with the game, and Git as our VCS.
Challenges we ran into
Everyone coming together to agree on the final design of the game while still respecting everyone's ideas was quite the challenge. Also, most of us were completely unfamiliar with GUI's and the learning curve was rather steep.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The fact that we were able to not only design a game but get it functioning from scratch within the 2-day time constraint, we are extremely proud of that.
What we learned
Learning new functions in Java and JavaFX, many of our team members had to learn JavaFX from scratch. We also learned a lot about communication and working on a project together.
What's next for Run The World
Adding many more features that we simply didn't have time to implement. A huge feature we want to add is key events. We want crises to happen and for the gameplay to reflect the severity of the said crisis. We also want to completely revamp our GUI and add more pixel art, as well as add a background along with music and sound FX that would evolve with the state of the world while you are playing. Public opinion is also something we want to implement, where if it gets low enough riots start giving you negative modifiers.
