Inspiration
Our inspiration comes from developing a travel-related app that uses machine learning, and crowdsourcing the content from the Internet (in terms of where to buy items, where to eat, what to do).
What it does
Ruksak allows travelers to search places of interest by uploading pictures. They will be able to travel to the specific location, read the reviews and also see suggested accommodations nearby. Ruksak has the ability to allow all travelers Worldwide visiting Singapore to search for items and places by uploading a photo.
How we built it
We developed the app in django. We used several APIs:
- Expedia
- Google Places, Google Maps, Google Translate
Challenges we ran into
Here's some of the challenges we faced:
- Exceeding the Google API limit at the 10-hour mark
- Merging the Expedia API and Google Places API
- Designing the flow of the app
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We completed an alpha app within 24 hours with 2 personnels in the team. And we're happy that we have successfully developed a travel-app that uses machine learning and we need not build any DBs for the content. The app runs smoothly with minimal bugs.
What we learned
We learned that a travel app need not be revolving about booking hotels, flights and venues.
What's next for Ruksak
Firstly, is to include other destinations/hotspots in Southeast Asia. Secondly, to update the web-app into a mobile-friendly version. Thirdly, building the Android and iOS versions.
