Inspiration
Rural India struggles with financial systems that are complex, text-heavy, and not built for low-literacy users. We wanted to create a simple, voice-based mentor that explains money in the language people actually speak—helping them feel confident instead of confused.
What it does
Rufin is an AI-powered financial literacy mentor that: Teaches banking, loans, EMIs, and digital payments through voice-led lessons Helps users find government schemes they are eligible for Protects them from scams and digital fraud Works in multiple languages and understands rural accents Runs smoothly on basic smartphones
How we built it
We built Rufin using: An AI model tuned for rural speech patterns A clean, lightweight chatbot interface Backend pipelines for context, safety filtering, and voice processing Micro-learning modules for simplified financial education Privacy-first storage that avoids saving sensitive data
Challenges we ran into
Handling diverse accents and low-literacy speech Simplifying financial concepts without losing accuracy Earning user trust through UI and tone Providing correct scheme recommendations Ensuring performance on low-end devices and poor networks
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Voice-first financial learning accessible to low-literate users Clear explanations that simplify loans, EMIs, and UPI safety Scheme discovery that unlocks real opportunities A multilingual, scalable platform Strong privacy practices that build trust
What we learned
Accessibility and simplicity require thoughtful design Voice interaction is far more effective for rural learners Trust is a core part of financial education Localized content dramatically improves adoption
