Inspiration
The Medical College Admissions Test is an exam required for the entrance to medical school taken by over 85000 examinees per year. While many exam prep softwares exist, they all have a very drab UI, causing potential fatigue when studying for several hours at a time, as well as adverse mental health effects. Having the experience of an MCAT examinee who studied for over 350 hours, and researched and trialed many test prep services during this process allowed our team to use these insights of what was helpful to create what we believe is the best possible software to facilitate learning.
What it does
Rudiments seeks to make studying fun. The more a student enjoys their studying experience, the more productive they will be, and the more they will retain, resulting in better exam performance. While the AAMC does release official materials, there is an extremely limited set of questions that cost over 400 USD to access in full leading to examinees rationing questions. By creating a reduced cost supplemental bank of questions using an interface that is entertaining yet calming, as well as informative we have allowed students an accessible point to start studying for the MCAT and achieving their dreams.
How we built it
Vanilla HTML CSS was used along with JavaScript was used to create our UI and functionality
Challenges we ran into
We ran into issues with version control, had difficulties consolidating HTML and JavaScript files. Additionally we worked up to the deadline creating stress, but are extremely proud of what we have created, despite our issues with GitHub.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are extremely proud to have built a functioning testing interface from the ground up within 24 hours, along with a bank of 14 questions that can be accessed, with feedback.
What we learned
We learned how to adapt to difficulties even though our deadline was approaching. One major issue was loading our content into GitHub, yet we were able to successfully submit our software as needed. The MCAT is 90% passage based, and one of our team members was able to gain experience in creating exam prep content.
What's next for Rudiments | Test Prep, Unparalleled
Our successful proof of concept with Rudiments demonstrates potential to roll it out as a test prep software, particularly to those seeking a more stimulating UI. We will likely roll out a find a study partner function after the hackathon, in order to give examinees a sense of community and accountability in studying. Additionally we will be able increase our question bank, allowing a further breadth of exposure to testable content. {placeholder}
