Inspiration

Our project was inspired by the vast amount of space junk that is currently in space and the possible consequences that this might entail for our current satellites and future space exploration. The main goal of our application is to bring into perspective the dangers of space junk -- its hard to think about the amount of destruction that heat shield orbiting at high speeds could cause, but much easier to comprehend how much damage phone could cause if it was thrown at you at around 17,000 mph -- a lot.

What it does

Our application takes in an image and identifies what the image is as well as a satellite/piece of space debris that is similar in mass to the application.

How we built it

Our project consists of 3 main parts, a ML model that identifies objects from images, databases that relate the object scanned to its mass and then to a specific satellite, and a frontend website.

Challenges we ran into

We have a frontend and backend that work independently, but it is difficult to connect them because python and javascript and html don't work well together. Additionally, due to limited computing power, we can't search through a comprehensive database of all everyday objects without crashing so our application may not be able to relate certain objects because they do not exist in our smaller database.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

All individual components work independently, which we were unsure would be possible in the first place. Additionally, one of our team members learned how to build a html/css website from scratch with functionality!

What we learned

We learned that its important to visualize how to connect components before building independent components.

What's next for Rubbish: Space Junk Identifier

Next, we will look to connect our components and increase our database so that more objects can be identified!
