Inspiration
RuangNusa was inspired by the beauty of Indonesia’s cultural diversity and the belief that stories bring people together. In today’s fast-paced digital world, cultural heritage often gets overlooked. We wanted to create a space where people can celebrate Indonesian traditions, share their personal experiences, and stay connected with their roots. RuangNusa is a platform that embraces the spirit of Bhinneka Tunggal Ika—Unity in Diversity—and keeps it alive in the digital age.
What it does
RuangNusa is a culture-based social platform designed to connect people through their love of Indonesia. It brings together users from across the archipelago (and beyond) to share, learn, and engage in meaningful conversations around local traditions, food, destinations, and more.
RuangNusa has 4 key features:
Homepage: The homepage of RuangNusa offers a dynamic and engaging entry point into the world of Indonesian culture. Users are greeted with a selection of curated featured content, easy access to cultural categories—ranging from food and dance to nature and traditions—and a section showcasing what’s currently trending in the community. Designed to be both inspiring and easy to navigate, the homepage invites users to explore and discover cultural stories from across the archipelago and beyond.
Galeri Budaya: Galeri Budaya is the heart of RuangNusa, where users can explore and share authentic cultural content. It showcases photos and videos uploaded by communities, creators, and local enthusiasts—highlighting Indonesian food, traditional attire, dances, festivals, scenic landscapes, and more. Each post includes a title, description, likes, and user comments to encourage interaction. Content is organized by categories, making it easy for users to browse based on their interests. Galeri Budaya is a living archive of Indonesia’s cultural diversity, shaped by the people who live it.
Komunitas: Komunitas feature provides an open, interactive space for users to connect through discussions and cultural engagement. In the forum section, users can ask questions, share personal stories, or start conversations about cultural practices, memories, and ideas. The layout resembles a social feed to keep things light and friendly. Additionally, users can join Cultural Challenges—fun activities like sharing childhood games, cooking regional dishes, or capturing moments from traditional ceremonies. Komunitas is where people come together to celebrate, learn, and grow through shared cultural experiences. RuangNusa is more than just a platform—it’s a digital home for cultural storytelling and connection. By bringing communities closer together, we aim to preserve and promote Indonesia’s cultural richness in a modern, engaging way.
Nusa (AI Assistant): Nusa is an AI-powered cultural assistant built to answer questions and guide users through Indonesia’s rich traditions and practices. Whether you're curious about local customs, regional dances, or traditional crafts, Nusa provides clear and friendly responses in seconds. It also helps users navigate the app, find content, and deepen their understanding of specific topics. Nusa is designed to be accessible for all users—students, travelers, researchers, or locals—offering a smooth and intelligent companion to explore culture through conversation.
How we built it
We started by mapping out the core idea of Ruang Nusa: a culture-based social platform that connects people through shared stories and traditions. Using Figma, we designed a clean and intuitive user interface that highlights community interaction while maintaining a strong focus on cultural identity.
Our design process included:
- User Flow Mapping: Identifying how users navigate from exploring content to joining communities and sharing their own stories.
- Wireframes & UI Design: Crafting each screen, from the Home Feed and Community Forum to the Search & Explore page.
- Prototyping: Building interactive prototypes to visualize user experience and improve the overall usability.
Through this, we ensured that Ruang Nusa wasn’t just functional, but also felt warm, welcoming, and uniquely Indonesian.
Challenges we ran into
This was a meaningful yet intense creative journey. Here are some of the challenges we encountered during the process:
- Time Management: With limited time during the hackathon, balancing ideation, design, and testing was a major challenge. We had to make quick decisions and stay on track without compromising quality.
- Cultural Representation: Designing something that reflects Indonesia’s vast and diverse culture isn’t easy. We had to be thoughtful and inclusive in how we represented traditions, languages, and communities.
- Maintaining Focus: Creative fatigue kicked in after hours of back-to-back brainstorming and design sessions. Staying motivated while refining every little detail wasn’t always easy, but teamwork kept us grounded.
- Enjoying the Process: Despite the pressure, we truly enjoyed every step. The shared excitement of building something meaningful—especially something that celebrates Indonesia—made it all worthwhile.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud to have brought the idea of Ruang Nusa to life—from a simple concept to a fully designed platform on Figma. We successfully created a user-friendly interface that blends functionality with cultural richness. One of our proudest achievements was designing features that encourage cultural exchange and engagement while maintaining visual consistency across all screens.
Despite time constraints, we managed to:
- Build a working prototype that reflects our core values of diversity and unity.
- Design an intuitive user flow that supports both exploration and interaction.
- Develop community-driven features that highlight stories, traditions, and local culture.
What we learned
This project taught us many valuable lessons, both technical and non-technical.
On the technical side, we enhanced our skills in user interface design, especially in structuring seamless navigation and accessibility across the platform. Figma became our main tool for ideating, testing, and polishing user experience. We also learned to think like our future users—what would they want to see, and how would they engage?
On the non-technical side, we improved our time management and communication skills, especially under tight deadlines. Collaboration was key—we learned to divide responsibilities, give constructive feedback, and support each other through the process. Most importantly, we learned that designing with purpose and empathy creates a deeper connection with users.
What's next for RuangNusa
RuangNusa is just getting started. While we’re proud of what we’ve built so far, there’s so much more we envision for the future of this cultural platform. In the next stages, we plan to focus on expanding functionality, enhancing user experience, and deepening cultural impact. Here are a few key directions we’re exploring:
- Mobile App Development (Android & iOS) To reach more users and make the platform more accessible, we plan to develop native mobile applications. This will allow smoother interaction, offline access to saved galleries, and better integration with phone features such as camera and GPS (for geotagging content).
- Localized Language Support Indonesia is home to hundreds of languages. While the app is currently in Indonesian and English, we’re working toward adding support for more local languages to ensure inclusivity and accessibility across all regions.
- Collaborations with Cultural Institutions To enrich the platform’s content, we plan to collaborate with museums, cultural centers, and educational institutions. These partnerships will help bring expert-curated content and open the door to workshops, live talks, and digital exhibitions within the app.
