Inspiration
HYROX is growing quickly, and I started training for HYROX myself.
As a beginner, I found plenty of apps for logging workouts, checking race results, or finding competitions. But I kept running into problems that those apps did not really solve:
- It is difficult to learn HYROX-specific techniques without access to HYROX equipment.
- Beginners often do not know the correct form, competition standards, or common mistakes for each station.
- Beginners also struggle with pacing and often burn too much energy early in the race.
I originally wanted to build RoxPath for myself, but after sharing the idea with friends who also train for HYROX, we realized these problems were common.
That became the idea behind RoxPath — Your Personal HYROX Coach: a training companion that helps beginner and intermediate athletes learn the movements, build a plan, and train effectively whether they are at a HYROX gym, a regular gym, or at home.
What it does
RoxPath helps athletes prepare for HYROX from training day to race day.
The core features include:
- Technique Library with demonstrations for HYROX movements
- Common mistakes, corrections, and coaching cues
- Exercise alternatives based on available equipment
- Personalized week-by-week training plans
- Guided workout sessions with movement demonstrations
- Workout logging for sets, reps, weight, distance, pace, and time
- Personal best tracking
- Training streaks and activity calendar
- A workout widget to follow the current session
One of our main goals was to make HYROX training accessible even if the user does not have access to specialized equipment like a sled or SkiErg.
How we built it
We built RoxPath as a native iOS app using SwiftUI.
We focused heavily on the workout experience and took inspiration from beginner-friendly fitness products such as Ladder. Instead of presenting users with a complicated dashboard, we designed the app around a simple question:
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge was building the Technique Library.
We wanted users to see clear demonstrations of exactly how each movement should be performed, including posture, movement timing, range of motion, and competition-standard technique.
To build the video library, we generated the exercise demonstrations using AI video generation.
However, AI-generated fitness videos can easily hallucinate movement details. A video may look realistic while showing the wrong posture, incorrect timing, unrealistic equipment interaction, or subtle movement errors.
Because of this, generating the videos was much more difficult than simply describing an exercise in a prompt.
We first defined the expected technique using advice from HYROX coaches and educational resources from experienced HYROX athletes and creators.
Then we repeatedly refined our prompts to control details such as:
- Starting posture
- Body position
- Range of motion
- Movement sequence
- Exercise tempo
- Equipment placement
- Camera angle
- Rep timing
Many generated videos had to be rejected and regenerated before the movement looked correct.
This was especially challenging because small mistakes in an exercise demonstration can be misleading for beginners, so visual quality alone was not enough — the movement itself had to be accurate.
Another challenge was designing workouts for users who do not have access to official HYROX equipment. We had to think carefully about alternative exercises that could reproduce similar movement patterns or training stimulus in a normal gym or home environment.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are especially proud that RoxPath goes beyond being another workout tracker.
The app combines:
- Technique education
- Training plans
- Guided workouts
- Workout logging
- Progress tracking
into one experience specifically designed for HYROX athletes.
We are also proud of the technique library. Creating consistent exercise demonstrations with AI while maintaining accurate movement standards required a lot of iteration.
Another accomplishment was designing the experience for beginners. Someone preparing for their first HYROX race can open the app and understand what to train, how to perform the exercises, and how their progress is developing without needing to already understand HYROX programming.
What we learned
One of our biggest learnings was that fitness products are not just about collecting more data.
For beginners, the more important problem is often reducing uncertainty.
Users want answers to questions like:
- Am I doing this movement correctly?
- What should I train today?
- What can I do if my gym does not have a sled?
- How hard should I run?
- Am I improving?
We also learned that AI-generated content requires strong validation when it represents physical movement.
A generated video can look visually convincing while still being technically wrong. Creating useful exercise demonstrations required combining AI generation with human expertise, references, and repeated review.
From a product perspective, we learned the importance of designing around real training environments. Not everyone has access to a specialized HYROX gym, so flexibility around equipment and location became one of the core principles of RoxPath.
