The theme "Into the Unknown" got us to think about what is unknown in the life of an average college student. This is when the idea of the fear of the unknown came into play.
We wanted to create an app takes the "unknown" that is the potential dangers of walking alone at night and provides a way for people to be able to journey into the unknown worry free.
This app was build using nodejs and utilizing tools such as firebase authentication, firebase firestore, google maps api, google routes api, google places api, and cloudfare.
One of the challenges we ran into include learning how to use each of the APIs in combination with each other in order to accomplish our ultimate goal of having a functional mapping feature. Beyond that figuring out how to connect everything so that both the front-end and back-end ran appropriately was a struggle.
This was an ambitious project for us. We knew it would be a lot of work, and while there are still more things we know we could have done with it, we are still proud of the amount of progress that we made given the time constraints.
We learned how to effectively utilize several APIs within the Google Maps API set. We learned how to use their cloud based system, such as Firebase which we used for both our authentication as well as for our database. Most of us learned a completely different web stack than we were used to, which included Remix, Firebase, and Tailwind.
RowdyBuddy has the potential to partner with schools and universities to send campus police or organizations like student council to escort students to wherever it is they may need to go. Until then, we plan to improve RowdyBuddy, specifically by improving the map, general polishing, and anything else necessary for turning our idea into a viable resource for students.
