Inspiration
Rover was conceptualised as a way to allow players to traverse large environments in virtual reality, without relying on directly changing their virtual position, as this can often cause motion sickness.
How I built it
This document is the result of research into the capabilities of PICO's Sense Pack, as well as developing ideas by modelling them in Unreal Engine 5.
Challenges I ran into
In building this concept, I used Unreal Engine 5 to prototype my ideas. For the sake of ease, this was not done in VR, but rather using an existing first-person template for keyboard controls. Consequently, I had to consider how what I was building would translate to a VR environment.
What I learned
Developing this project has required me to learn aspects of Unreal Engine 5 I was previously not familiar with, including traces/raycasts, scene capture components and different modes of collision. Additionally, this was my first experience of designing a product for virtual reality and I have gained a new appreciation for the technology can uniquely facilitate.
