Inspiration
We were inspired by our own experiences at Temple University. Showing up to the right building for our classes as new students was a stressful experience. Everyone has their own stories. Being introduced to what could be an alien experience and location might cause a sense of isolation and aimlessness. New students might feel confined to their trodden paths and not realize that there are communities and events happening all over campus.
What it does
Our project, called "rouTU" (pronounced: route-to) will make it simple for students, faculty, or visitors at Temple University to get around campus without feeling the nervousness of getting lost. With a simple user choice of an image schedule, text, or speech input, our project makes navigation accessible to many. It does this by allowing users to find quick and accessible walking routes along campus. This makes finding classrooms as easy as the click of a button.
How we built it
We are building it using our teams' background with different languages and API's. We are currently utilizing/planning to implement Google Gemini for the chatbot (human language parsing) functionality. we will (if successful) use Auth0 for the logins and MongoDB for the database.
Challenges we ran into
Some problems we faced include: setting up a dynamic website with a server for the project to run on, rendering map layers correctly, figuring out how to use Google's AI Studio and Gemini API correctly, setting up a MongoDB connection for records and using Auth0 for Sign Up/Sign In.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of the amount of effort and commitment put into the project. We worked hard on the UI and maps scroll functionality. Also, we proud of the input parsing that is available in the project.
What we learned
Our team has learnt a lot about web applications and how to deploy them. We've used Google's AI Studio extensively to analyze and update our frontend code in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Additionally, we've used python-based fastapi and uvicorn for backend development.
What's next for RouTU
Temple University has an ever expanding footprint in the city, state, and various countries. For now it is limited to the Main Campus on Philadelphia, but we want to eventually expand our application to be inclusive for other campuses like Health Sciences Campus, Temple University Center City, Ambler Campus, Harrisburg Campus, Japan Campus, Temple University Rome and any future campuses.
