WayAware

WayAware was inspired by a simple problem: navigation apps tell us the fastest way to get somewhere, but rarely what we may encounter along the way. We built WayAware to combine navigation with situational awareness, helping users view current NYC incidents, understand historical crime patterns along their route, and consider alternatives when needed. Rather than labeling neighborhoods as safe or dangerous, we focus on specific incidents, locations, route segments, and historical patterns. We learned that responsible location intelligence requires both useful data and clear communication of context and uncertainty. Next, we hope to integrate more real-time data, strengthen our analysis, support more transportation modes, and expand beyond New York City, with one goal: helping people know what’s ahead.
