Inspiration
Translink's 2040 Transportation Plan aims to create zero traffic related fatalities, we want to aid in that effort.
Roundabouts have been proven to significantly reduce intersection collisions around the world. They help keep every type of road user safe.
Our goal was to identify intersections with high collision rates and help determine which of them could benefit from being redesigned as roundabouts. By making collision data more accessible, we hope to encourage safer and more informed urban planning decisions in Vancouver.
What it does
RoundIt provides an interactive visualization of ICBC crash data around intersections.
It maps intersection crashes as clickable nodes on an interactive MapLibre map, ranking intersections by colour (red being the most collisions, blue being the least) based on number of total crashes from 2018-2022. The intersection points are further visualized through a heat layer which zones high impact areas.
We aim to help users visualize traffic safety issues and explore how changes to road infrastructure could make Vancouver's streets safer.
How we built it
We obtained crash data from the Kaggle ICBC Vehicle Crash Dataset and used Python, Pandas, and NumPy to process collision records.
We parsed our cleaned records into GeoJSON which directly gave the needed latitude and longitude to determine the locations on our map.
This was all presented using TypeScript, HTML, CSS, MapLibre, and Vanilla UI.
Challenges we ran into
Our biggest hurdle was figuring out how to actually process the data and put it onto the map as a layer. We had never worked on such a data oriented project before so it was definitely a learning experience.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of getting our intersection points loaded, and deploying our application!
What we learned
We learned to enjoy the process.
What's next for RoundIt
RoundIt has endless possibilities, and we know that, but we hope to focus on how a nationwide high speed rail system would benefit Canadians.
