ROKI: AI-Powered Business Creation for Underserved Communities
Inspiration
The driving force behind "roki" was recognizing a critical gap in global innovation infrastructure. While Silicon Valley and European tech hubs have access to sophisticated business development tools, structured frameworks, and comprehensive project management platforms, entrepreneurs in Africa and underserved communities worldwide often start with nothing more than an idea and determination. We were inspired by the potential of AI to democratize business creation and bridge the infrastructure gap that prevents brilliant ideas from becoming successful enterprises. We recognized the limitations of existing tools, particularly the disconnect between development environments, project management dashboards, and the lack of structured business development frameworks for emerging markets. We were inspired by the potential of AI to bridge these gaps and empower developers, project managers, and entrepreneurs in underserved communities to build better software and businesses more efficiently.
What it does
"roki" is an AI-powered business creation platform that seamlessly integrates with VS Code, provides intelligent project analysis, automates social media content generation, and offers comprehensive project tracking. It transforms ideas into structured, executable business plans and technical projects, empowering users to build spec-driven businesses through structured development processes. The platform consists of two integrated components: a comprehensive web dashboard at roki.pro that provides AI-powered business analysis, market intelligence, financial modeling, and strategic planning tools, and a universal VSCode extension that seamlessly integrates business planning with technical execution. It empowers users to manage all aspects of their projects within a unified environment, from initial brainstorming and requirements gathering to deployment and marketing, addressing the unique challenges faced by entrepreneurs in emerging markets.
How we built it
We built "roki" as a comprehensive project management system coupled with an intelligent coding assistant/manager, but better. Using Next.js 15 for the backend and frontend, React 19 with Tailwind CSS for the UI, Clerk for authentication, Pinecone for the vector database, and Vercel for hosting, we created a platform that seamlessly integrates business planning with technical execution. We integrated Google Gemini AI and OpenAI-compatible endpoints to provide intelligent insights and content generation. Our VS Code extension leverages a file watcher service and sync service to maintain real-time synchronization with the web dashboard, creating a unified environment where project management and coding work together seamlessly. The platform's architecture prioritizes accessibility, with browser-based access for the web dashboard and universal compatibility across all VSCode-based editors, making it accessible no matter your existing toolset.
Challenges we ran into
Building a platform as ambitious as "roki" presented several technical challenges. Real-time synchronization between the VS Code extension and the web dashboard required careful design and implementation to ensure data integrity and handle potential conflicts. Integrating multiple AI providers and managing API keys and rate limits also required a robust solution. Creating a truly universal VSCode extension that works across different editors and platforms required extensive testing and compatibility considerations.
Perhaps most challenging was designing business templates and frameworks that are relevant across different African markets and regulatory environments while maintaining global applicability.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We had our first client launch an E-mobility business! We were so pleased to witness roki being used by an entrepreneur in Africa to create a really innovative startup. We have always envisioned roki as just the beginning. The real prize for us is the businesses it will create, seeing a user create a business with such a big impact using roki felt like the biggest validation ever. read about the startup created through roki: https://www.roki.pro/blog/blog-post-1757335335994-b6ilsepna
What we learned
Building "roki" has been a tremendous learning experience. We've gained valuable insights into the complexities of real-time synchronization, AI integration, and building robust VS Code extensions. We've also learned the importance of focusing on core features and prioritizing user experience. We've gained valuable insights into the infrastructure gaps that prevent innovation in emerging markets and the importance of creating accessible, universal tools that work across different environments. We've learned that successful business development requires more than just technical tools—it requires structured frameworks, comprehensive analysis, and seamless integration between business planning and technical execution. Most importantly, we've learned that democratizing innovation requires not just technology, but a deep understanding of the specific challenges and opportunities in different markets and communities.
What's next for roki
Our immediate focus is on refining the core features . Future enhancements include implementing team collaboration features, an advanced analytics dashboard, and third-party integrations. We also plan to explore mobile optimization to expand accessibility and cater to a wider range of users. Our immediate focus is also on expanding roki's impact in African markets through localization, language support, and region-specific business templates. We're developing partnerships with African universities and technical schools to integrate roki into entrepreneurship education programs. Our long-term vision is to make roki the standard platform for business creation in emerging markets, ensuring that innovation is not limited by geography, infrastructure, or economic resources.
