Inspiration
We wanted to build a mobile application to solve a real problem for people we know. Oftentimes, students at Towson meet up to play sports. The problem is that there is no one centralized platform, designed to fulfill this need.
What it does
Roster allows students at Towson University to view a feed of activities at the different athletic facilities on campus. They can view the timeframe of the event, see participants, and even use Google Maps to see the location of the event.
How we built it
We used the Ionic Framework to build out the mobile application, as well as Firebase to handle authentication and hosting of our real-time database.
Challenges we ran into
We battled with a learning curve throughout the weekend. It was nice to get out beyond our normal domain, but we ran into some bumps along the road. We originally planned to use React-Native, and spent a fair amount of time getting started with that. Then we decided to switch to Ionic and Firebase, and the fun continued...
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our user interface is one of our favorite things about Roster. We took the time to build a welcoming and fluid login screen, so that the first thing a user sees comes with a pleasant experience.
While I had worked with Angular before this weekend, Nick was completely new to both Angular and Ionic. We are now both happy to say that we feel comfortable working with the framework.
What we learned
We leared so much about the tech stack that we used, however more noteworthy would be the person to person and planning skills we utilized. Working with such a time crunch and in a group of 2, it was important that we recognized when and where our efforts were going to be fruitful.
What's next for Roster
We hope to head home and get students at Towson using the app that we developed.
