Inspiration

This music video is a hyper-realistic exploration of the greatest tragedy in Ferdowsi's Shahnameh: the fatal battle between Rostam and his son, Sohrab. I was inspired by the melancholic depth of Persian epic poetry and the atmospheric quality of Eastern Downtempo music ("The Lament of Rostam", an original custom soundtrack, produced by the author). My goals were to visualize this inevitable doom in a cinematic style worthy of its scale.

What it does

The project visualizes the Shahnameh's epic poem in a modern cinematic format. It synchronizes a full three-minute track with a hyper-detailed, slow-motion narrative. Crucially, the narrative features a moment of intense suspense where the music recedes, replaced by a custom-recorded Shahnameh couplet, voiced by a professional narrator, to amplify the feeling of tragic destiny. The final output is a multi-layered video that merges present-day confrontation (the battle), a two-layered flashback (Tahmina's memory of giving the armlet and her romantic past), and a tragic climax (the fatal blow and the revelation of the sign).

How we built it

We built the video using advanced generative AI (Google Veo 3.1) coupled with custom 3D asset generation for character consistency. The entire process relied heavily on detailed pre-production:

  • Asset Creation: The initial hyper-realistic character and environment references (Rostam, Sohrab, Tahmina) were produced using Whisk.
  • Sound Design: The original soundtrack ("The Lament of Rostam") was composed using Suno.
  • Workflow: The narrative was mapped shot-by-shot against the music's rhythmic structure (Audio Decoupage). Image Prompts were used as the primary input for every single video shot to ensure visual consistency.

Challenges we ran into

  • Battle Consistency: It was the most demanding task, requiring multiple generation attempts and meticulous frame-by-frame editing to maintain consistent action, momentum, and character poses during high-motion shots.
  • Character Consistency: Maintaining the exact face and armor on Rostam and Sohrab across 45+ separate generated clips.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Successfully translating a two-thousand-year-old epic poem into a seamless, high-fidelity 3D cinematic narrative.
  • Achieving photorealistic character consistency in AI-generated video (a notoriously difficult task).
  • Creating an emotionally resonant music video that matches the rhythm and feeling of the music track, rather than just generating random scenes.

What we learned

We learned that pre-production and detailed human direction (shot-listing, character sheets) are essential in AI filmmaking. The AI acts as a rendering engine; the human must be the director. However, the deepest learning was personal: connecting profoundly with the characters' struggles, seeing the complex, multi-layered narrative as a reflection of our own shadows, and discovering new human perspectives within the ancient text.

What's next for Rostam and Sohrab

We hope to develop this concept further into a limited cinematic series. The next planned installment is Bīžan and Manīzheh, pivoting the aesthetic from cold tragedy and fate to warm, forbidden romance and intrigue, while utilizing the same high-fidelity 3D Real style.
