Inspiration

Indonesia, one of the most culturally diverse country, with 1300 ethnic groups, 700 more regional languages and countless traditional festivals, rituals and art forms. However, the country is facing a growing cultural disconnect, especially among future generations who are increasingly drawn to global pop culture and fast paced digital lifestyles. As we head towards a more digital life, many cultural practices are seen as outdated or inaccessible, local events go unnoticed especially from undeserving communities, culture fades and the identity of the country vanish. What is needed is a fresh, intuitive way to rediscover and interact with culture, one that is speak the language of this generation while honoring the richness of the past.

What it does

Introduce Roots & Tours, a culturally immersive app that connects people especially youth with Indonesia’s rich heritage by making culture accessible, engaging and relevant. By turning discovery into a journey, guided by people, places and real life stories near them and across Indonesia, they can uncover cultural experiences happening around them or discovering cultural experiences happening in other places in Indonesia. Our solution provide authentic local insight, sparks curiosity, pride and connection, while ensuring that our culture is preserved and celebrated across generations.

How we built it

Our solution is designed using Figma that allows us to visualize and rapidly build an interactive solution, we use this approach as we saw that a solution towards a problem can not be rushed but must be thoughtfully crafted with care, creativity and deep understanding, we focus on building a meaningful experience first, one that is unique and applicable in the future, this ensures that our solution deeply understand the problem and serve the users, before moving into full implementation.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

1. Culture Discovery Experience This feature offers an interactive way to explore cultural landmarks, stories and traditions across Indonesia through a dynamic map based interfaces. Users can discover meaningful places, browse real photos from those place and gain a deeper understanding from the location, that culture is based in. This makes local culture around Indonesia accessible and immersive, encouraging users to explore within their surroundings or beyond.
2. Local buddy Feeling lost? Or do not know what to do in area you are at? Fear not this feature enables user to connect with passionate and reputable local individuals who can guide you through cultural experience within that area, what makes it more fun is that you could either join with people you have never met before in a public space, or decide to join together with your friends making this local experience even more immersive. To add to that you will be supporting local communities through income and exposure.
3. Connecting local communities to you. Feeling bored? And do not know what to do? Our feature detects local communities that are near you and to show you different activities that you may be interested in, for example Whether its joining a traditional cooking class, watching a local dance rehearsal, participating in a village festival, or helping with a community ritual, you will always find something meaningful to explore. It’s like having a cultural compass in your pocket helping you break routine, connect with people, and experience the richness of Indonesia in ways you never expected.

What we learned

The brainstorming process was really fun, it shows to us that our ideas could be flawed even though it seem perfect to us, by hearing other peoples perspectiive and being open, it really show that the teamwoirk really makes the dreamwork.

What's next for Roots and Tours

With all the root of the problem done and a MVP product that has already been perfectly designed using Figma, we strive to create a fully functional mobile app that host those features.
