Inspiration
We were inspired by our families, who have gardens and work very hard but struggle to grow and preserve the seeds that they sow.
What it does
Rootery is a high-tech plant pot that helps gardeners by making their lives much easier. Rootery detects all the important details of growing a plant, such as the amount of water, temperature, humidity, and light levels. This information is displayed on an LCD screen attached to the front of the pot. Along with that, it alerts the user if the plant needs something, such as more light or water.
How we built it
We built Rootery using an Arduino board, a water level sensor, a temperature and humidity sensor, a photoresistor (a component that detects light levels), and an LCD display. We use these sensors and process the information in the Arduino in order to display that information on the LCD display.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge we ran into is making a way for the users to see the information. Originally, we wanted to make an app in order to display the information. However, we were limited by our resources and didn't have the necessary component required to upload the information onto an app. To solve this problem, we decided to use the LCD display to display the information about the plant.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are really proud that we were able to develop a working product that can help people all over the world with a common problem.
What we learned
Doing this project, we learned all of the important information about designing a product and making sure it works. Along with that, we also learned a lot about Arduino and electronic components that we can use to make more projects in the future.
What's next for Rootery
In the future, we want to give Rootery a full makeover. To start, we want to replace our temporary prototype casing with a proper pot that will first be 3D printed but eventually made using injection molds, to decrease the amount of microplastics in the plant. Along with that, our next big step for Rootery is to add an app as part of it. To do that, we need some new components that we can use to connect the device to the device wirelessly. This app will allow us to send notifications straight to the user's phone. Along with that, we will add functionality for the app to control an irrigation system. Hopefully, Rootery could be the next best innovation.
