Inspiration
We were inspired by our own personal experiences as International students at Duke. Leaving our home country and all of our friends and family to attend university was scary and stressful. There was so much to know and it was either overwhelming or not as helpful as it needed to be.
What it does
Root-In guides International students through housing options close to campus and other helpful tips about what to expect in the very different US culture.
How we built it
We built a JavaScript/node.js application to use a File-Search enabled ChatGPT Assistant API with RAG data.
Challenges we ran into
The documentation for the API was not up to date, and we had to figure it out. We did not get API credits for ChatGPT or for the other APIs we wanted to use to get relevant information for our agent, including Google Maps and various real estate applications that would help search for living arrangements.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We have a working web application that provides some pretty useful information that we think will be very helpful to International students at Duke and beyond!
What we learned
We learned that each of us has different skills to contribute, and we are happy to have done this and learn so much about LLMs.
What's next for Root-In
First, Duke, then the Triangle, then professonals and not only students, then the world!
