Inspiration
Project Name: Root Guardian – AI-Based Underground Crop Health Monitoring Robot
Problem Statement
Farmers can easily see the leaves, stems, and fruits of a crop, but they cannot see what is happening below the soil. Most crop failures begin in the root zone due to root diseases, poor soil moisture, compacted soil, or lack of oxygen. By the time these problems become visible, it is often too late to save the crop. There is currently no affordable robotic system that continuously monitors the underground health of crops.
Project Objective
To design an autonomous AI-powered robot that travels through crop fields, monitors the underground root zone, detects early root problems, analyzes soil conditions, and sends real-time alerts to farmers before crop damage occurs.
Innovation
Unlike existing farming robots that only monitor the crop from above, the Root Guardian focuses on the underground part of the plant. It uses a robotic soil probe with smart sensors to collect real-time data about root health and soil conditions without harming the crop.
Working Principle
- The robot moves automatically between crop rows using DC motors.
- Ultrasonic sensors help it avoid obstacles.
- At selected points, a robotic arm inserts a thin soil probe into the ground.
- The probe measures soil moisture, temperature, soil compaction, and root-zone conditions.
- An AI system analyzes the collected data.
- If abnormal conditions are detected, the robot immediately sends an alert to the farmer's mobile phone.
- The robot stores field data and creates a health map of the entire farm.
