Inspiration

We were inspired by the efforts of the organization to make a change in a broken system. In addition, it really stood out to us that we never actually considered this issue and have never heard of it or any activist groups fighting on its behalf.

What it does

We made some small additions to their existing website - adding a button for incarcerated individuals and their friends/relatives to submit their experiences through re-entry. We hope to use this information and format it similar to the "Humans of New York" posts found on Facebook, then post is on the existing Facebook page. Moreover, we prepared a website linked from the original that invites students to participate in fundraising/awareness efforts.

How I built it

Some simple changes were made to a local version of the website which properly links to a Google form collecting stories and a website with resources for students and other individuals to get involved in a community.

Challenges I ran into

As we are freshman, all of whom are biology majors (one considering CS), we found it difficult to attempt something so technology focused. It took much more effort than it needed to change the HTML code and our limited expertise greatly limited our options.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

As amateurs to HTML, we felt proud in that we were able to edit a local version of the website and to format it to look professional and implementable for our clients.

What I learned

Coming up with ideas and finding one that is both feasible and useful is extremely difficult and will take a large portion of time to do properly. Moreover, we further learned how essential coding experience is at such events as it opens up a realm of possibilities.

What's next for Root and Rebound: Expanding Outreach

We hope that our project would be selected and implemented by Root and Rebound and that it will make a drastic positive difference. We are excited to see what will eventually come of our projects.
