Inspiration
As students, we've often experienced the frustration of repeatedly making the same mistakes despite practicing more questions. We realized that solving additional problems doesn't always help unless the actual source of the misunderstanding is identified. This observation led us to ask a simple question: "What if AI could diagnose why a student made a mistake rather than just marking it wrong?" ROOT was born from this idea.
What it does
ROOT is an AI-powered learning diagnostic system that identifies the root causes of student mistakes. By analyzing answer patterns, concept relationships, and learning history, it provides personalized insights and targeted interventions to help students overcome learning gaps faster and more effectively.
How we built it
We built ROOT using a combination of AI-based error classification, knowledge tracing, and learning graph technology. Student responses are analyzed to identify patterns of mistakes, which are then mapped to underlying concept dependencies. The platform diagnoses likely root causes of learning difficulties and generates personalized recommendations to help students address specific knowledge gaps more effectively.
Challenges we ran into
-Balancing AI accuracy with explainable, teacher-friendly insights. -Designing personalized recommendations that are useful and actionable. -Addressing privacy and responsible AI considerations when working with student learning data.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our proudest achievement is creating a system that treats every mistake as an opportunity to learn, grow, and improve rather than just a mark of failure.
What we learned
Building ROOT taught us that every mistake has a story behind it. We learned that understanding why a student struggles is often more valuable than simply knowing they got an answer wrong.
What's next for ROOT : AI for Root-Cause Analysis of Learning Errors
Next, we plan to expand ROOT with real-time diagnostics, multi-subject support, smarter personalized recommendations, and teacher analytics. Our vision is to make root-cause analysis a standard part of learning so that every mistake becomes an opportunity for growth.
