Inspiration
Franklin D Roosevelt was a very personable president, known for his leadership throughout WW2 as well as his stints on public radio, making himself heard to the common man, who admired him greatly. Most people now couldn't dream of having his level of dealing with people. Most people are unfortunately afraid and anxious; they want so desperately to be heard yet struggle to convey themselves when the opportunity presents itself. Public speaking skills and training shouldn't be relegated to just CEOs and celebrities. An avenue for practice, training, and perfection should be easily available to all! We can all be a Roosevelt!
What it does
Roose is a web application that aids people with their public speaking skills and helps improve the quality of their speeches. Not only does it provide an avenue for text analysis, but It can also analyze voice in real-time, enabling improvement on things like pronunciation, pauses, body language, just to name a few! Roose is a one-stop-shop for all your public speaking needs, being able to also enable improvements to the topic structure of your speeches, as well as allowing you to remember to look at the camera more when speaking to your audience!
How we built it
I built a simple web app with simple async text analysis. This offered the user simple suggestions for written text. I then integrated camera/webcam functionality and Symbol.ai API to enable live captioning and analysis in real-time. I then finally offered a video upload and playback feature for the uploading of speeches in order for the user to reflect on their past work or for them to analyze famous speeches of history in order to see what the pros did right and wrong.
Challenges we ran into
Being a one-man army, I had trouble finding time for polishing up the web app and making it both desktop and mobile-friendly. Some of the proposed functionality had to be slimmed down to make the deadline. I feel as if the final project however is still beneficial in inspiring people to practice their public speaking skills. Time management was also a problem faced as certain complications slowed development and lead to the cutting of certain features.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I am proud of coming up with a solution to a problem that has affected me personally. I sometimes get anxious during presentations and sometimes feel as if what I really want to say and the ideas I want to convey can't come out in the best way possible. I feel as if a similar solution to Roose were to come out and be fully realized, it could benefit many people who otherwise wouldn't know where to begin to try and improve their public speaking skills.
What we learned
I have learned how to use various third-party tools to enrich my ideas and the value of properly setting up the planning of an application to avoid complications in the future.
What's next for Roose
Polishing and implementing key functionality to the web app is priority one on the agenda. Adding more specialized functionality helpful to improving speeches is also important in providing value to the user. Conversing with experts on the market to see if the problem Roose solves actually scratches an itch in the market and that solves a problem people have. Future plans also include adding both a general tip and vocal exercise functionality and a unique profile system in which the user can see what they uniquely excel in, and what they need to improve on - with training tailored to them personally.
