Inspiration
Inspiration came for our app when we realized that the planning it takes to create public areas that abide by social distancing rules were in fact a herculean task. The conventional methods it takes to follow the regulations in certain environments are more difficult and require serious thought. We came up with multiple ways to solve the problem and eventually settled on our current one.
What it does
So Roomsie in layman's terms will scan the entire room with the help of the user and then will designate certain spots where furniture can be placed. It can vary from different organizations such as schools, offices, restaurants, and many more. It can also map out spots on open areas if certain events require it such as concerts.
How we built it
We created our masterpiece using a perfect combination between The Unity engine, ARkit, and blender. The assets (furniture in our case) were all done on blender and the rest is on the previously mentioned software. The language incorporated is C# and we utilized the Android studio and Xcode for debugging purposes. Our specially engineered algorithm is the jewel of our creation as it determines the maximum yet ideal number of assets that can be placed while still adhering to safety protocols without compromising efficiency.
Challenges we ran into
Other than the perfection of asset models on blender, Our algorithm is where we struggled the most. It was such a tedious process to debug our algorithm and we are proud to report that it was an overall success
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Well in the words of Frank Sinatra, If you’re not proud, You’re not done. Happily, however, we are done and quite pleased about the final outcome of our painstaking efforts.
What we learned
We gained a massive amount of respect for AR-based creators. We also learned the ropes on creating apps using the unity engine as well as learning the C# computer language.
What's next for Roomsie
A collaboration with local and national health regulation authorities is in the works to create a standard or seal of approval for those businesses that utilize our application. All their data will be stored in our database and the relevant authorities will be given access to said data in order to approve them from a health and safety standpoint.
What's next for Mmasters of Disaster
We plan to attend a large number of hackathons for a chance to compete against the best at Pinnacle. We also plan to revisit our earlier projects and fulfill our commitments to keep them relevant and up to date.
