Briefly describe your project in relation to the design prompt
Our project addresses the CBRE prompt by designing a mobile app to simplify campus facility navigation and usage of UTD facilities. The app will statically display features such as real-time room availability, simplified booking, and efficient maintenance reports. Students are able to locate study spaces through the map, reserve rooms based on the building they click, and receive notifications about their bookings. We also incorporated elements such as an interactive campus map, which is more visually appealing and intuitive for the user than a drop-down menu of all buildings.
Describe your main design decisions and how they contribute to your product
Our main design decisions focused on enhancing the app's intuitiveness, functionality, and user experience. One of the more significant changes was replacing a traditional dropdown menu for selecting study rooms with an interactive campus map. This would allow users to easily locate study spaces and click directly on buildings to view room availability instead of scrolling.
Upon selecting "Reserve," users are presented with real-time room availability. Due to time constraints in our project, this feature is static and reflects a specific time. However, this design choice is meant to still showcase the concept of dynamic room availability based on the user’s current time. The map will display current availability if the student wants a room immediately. If planning ahead, a filtering system is used and would adjust the map seen by the user to show the new availabilities.
To simulate these features in our demo, we used static pages to create the illusion of dynamic changes. While this limits interactivity, it still conveys the app's concept and design intention. These pages would be replaced with variables and real-time data updates in a fully developed product. Though constrained by current limitations, these decisions are meant to showcase the app’s potential to provide a user-friendly solution for campus navigation and facility management.
