ROOMMATE — Spatial AI Companion
ROOMMATE started from a simple question: what if completing a goal did not feel like managing another flat checklist?
We built ROOMMATE as a spatial productivity companion that turns a user's goal into a physical-feeling workspace. Instead of presenting tasks only as conventional 2D UI, ROOMMATE places tasks into a spatial environment where the user can focus on, interact with, and complete them.
The experience follows a simple loop:
Goal → Understand → Plan → Spatial Action → Progress → Remember → Return
A user chooses a goal such as building a project, learning a skill, or planning a productive week. ROOMMATE creates a small spatial task sequence. The companion guides the user toward the next task, while task objects visually react as progress is made. Completed work changes the state of the workspace, and unfinished progress is remembered so the user can return and continue.
The project was built from scratch during the competition using TypeScript, Three.js, Vite, and Meta's Immersive Web SDK (IWSDK) for WebXR. We designed the interaction around hands-first spatial use while also providing a browser/emulator path for development and demonstration.
One of our biggest challenges was making a spatial experience work reliably across both immersive and browser environments. We built a browser fallback and interaction layer so the core experience could be tested without requiring a headset during every development cycle. We also had to carefully design the task objects, focus states, companion behavior, progress feedback, and persistent session state so the environment itself communicates what the user should do next.
We learned that spatial productivity is not simply about placing a traditional app into 3D. The environment has to become part of the interaction model. ROOMMATE therefore treats space, object position, visual emphasis, interaction, and memory as part of the productivity experience.
The current prototype focuses on a tight vertical slice: setting a goal, entering a spatial workspace, completing spatial tasks, seeing the environment respond, and returning to continue progress.
Our next step is to expand ROOMMATE's intelligence and personalization while continuing to explore how spatial computing can make everyday productivity feel more natural, contextual, and motivating.
