One of the hardest parts about student housing is finding the best roommates for you. However that poses a challenge, because you're friends aren't always the best choice and its difficult to find people elsewhere. Social media and websites like Kijiji have become popular but have security and privacy risks when interacting with strangers. Our website aims to combat that by providing a safe option to finding roommates!
What it does
Roommate squared is a website that connects you with other people looking for roommates. It's an alternative to using social media or websites like kijiji that may pose security or privacy risks.
How we built it
Firstly, we discussed the idea for our project and decided the role of each member. Then, we prepared a prototype using Figma. Referring to the prototype, We coded the front end with HTML, CSS, and Bootstrap, and the backend with Node.js, Express, and MongoDB. Finally, We deployed our application to Heroku.
Challenges we ran into
We found it would be hard to develop a chat page in terms of function to send and receive messages. This time, the UI of the page has been created, but we believe that users can understand what the page means.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of creating an appealing design referring to a prototype and developing authentication so that only authenticated users can see profiles, search, and chat pages.
What we learned
We learned and experienced the entire process of developing our application. Also, we learned how to collaborate with team members to proceed with our project efficiently.
What's next for Roommate(Squared)
As we mentioned earlier, we will add a function to send and receive the message. In addition, we can improve the search function and use AJAX so that users can show search results without the browser reload. It seems a good idea to use React or AngularJS and make our application SPA.
