Roomies

Inspiration

We’re roommates, and we absolutely can’t stand each other. That gave inspiration to this project, and through DubHacks, we were able to give life to this project while mending our broken relationship. Also, we like to lie for fun.

What it does

Roomies facilitates a collaborative, decentralized list of chores and other general living space management tasks for roommates. We can playfully incentivize the action of cultivating shared living spaces by gamifying chores using a simple point system and leaderboard. Through this, we seek to encourage a type of casual collaborative competition that brings roommates closer. Our platform also serves as a hub for those seeking resources on topics like instructions for cleaning various living spaces, interpersonal skills such as conflict resolution, and even little things like tips for mindfulness when sharing a home space with others.

How we built it

Started with designing the different components of our application using Figma. This allowed us to see how the user would see and interact with our implementations. From there, we the Flutter framework to implement the UI, and functionality.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges we ran into was deciding how the app would be laid out in terms of UI. Although it was easy to jump right into the project and start implementing initial ideas, we often had to stop every so often to discuss how we wanted certain features to look or how the flow of the app would work. Another big challenge was working with the time restraint we were given - we had to choose to implement core features and had to make decisions to cut some more intricate designs in favor for alternatives that proved to be more straightforward. Within the time restraint, we had brainstormed a variety of ideas for the app - such as implementing a chat function, and changing our target audience to include families with parents assigning chores to children.

Creating an idea that we all feel we would use in our daily lives.

What we learned

Thorough planning is required for major projects like this.
Splitting up the tasks amongst group members, and allowing each person to do what they are best at helped with getting the most done in such a short amount of time.
