Inspiration

Living in college dorms and shared apartments, we experienced firsthand how small misunderstandings about chores, expenses, and schedules can spiral into major conflicts. We watched friendships strain over forgotten trash duties and awkward money conversations. Research confirmed our experience: nearly 50% of students report roommate disagreements that impact their academic success and well-being. We realized there wasn't a single solution that addressed all these pain points together. That's when Room8 was born, an all-in-one platform to transform roommate chaos into harmony.

What it does

Room8 is a comprehensive shared living hub that consolidates everything roommates need into one seamless app.

  • Shared Calendar: Sync schedules, coordinate events, and give heads-ups about guests, all integrated with Google Calendar
  • Chore Management: Assign tasks with built-in reminders so nothing falls through the cracks
  • Expense Tracking: Split bills, track IOUs, and settle payments without awkward conversations
  • Digital Fridge Board: Post notes, doodle drawings, celebrate birthdays, and share quick messages
  • Easy Onboarding: Add new roommates with one tap so they instantly get access to everything

Not 6 apps, not 7, but Room8.

How we built it

We built Room8 using a modern tech stack designed for scalability and real-time collaboration.

  • Frontend: React Native for cross-platform mobile development, ensuring smooth performance on both iOS and Android
  • Backend: Node.js with Express for robust API management
  • Database: Firebase Firestore for real-time data synchronization across all roommates
  • Authentication: Firebase Auth for secure user management
  • Integration: Google Calendar API for seamless schedule syncing
  • UI/UX: Figma for prototyping, with a focus on intuitive, student-friendly design

We followed an agile development process, iterating based on feedback from beta testers in actual roommate situations.

Challenges we ran into

Building a real-time, shared living platform came with several technical and product challenges.

  • Real-time Synchronization: Ensuring that when one roommate updates a chore or expense, all others see it instantly was technically complex. We optimized Firebase listeners to reduce lag while managing battery consumption.
  • Privacy vs. Transparency: Balancing shared information with individual privacy required careful design. We implemented granular permission settings so roommates can control what they share.
  • User Adoption: Convincing entire households to adopt a new app is harder than converting individual users. We addressed this by making onboarding extremely simple and delivering value from day one.
  • Expense Settlement Logic: Designing an algorithm that suggests optimal payment settlements, minimizing the number of transactions, was mathematically challenging but essential for a smooth user experience.
  • Cross-Platform Consistency: Ensuring consistent behavior and appearance across devices and operating systems required extensive testing and refinement.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Unified Solution: We successfully consolidated 6 to 7 separate apps into one cohesive platform.
  • Live Demo Success: Adding an audience member as a roommate in real time during our presentation showcased the app’s instant functionality.
  • User Testing Validation: Beta testers reported a 60% reduction in roommate conflicts within the first month.
  • Clean, Intuitive Design: Despite complex functionality, users consistently praise how easy Room8 is to navigate.
  • Real Impact: We are not just building an app. We are improving student well-being, academic performance, and mental health.

What we learned

This project pushed us to grow both technically and as a team. We deepened our understanding of real-time databases, state management in React Native, and API integration, learning that early performance optimization prevents major issues later. Through user testing, we discovered that simplicity matters more than feature density. Users want clear solutions, not complexity.

We also learned that the true value of Room8 lies in having everything in one place. No single feature stands alone as the most important. Seamless integration is what users care about most. While we built Room8 for students, we realized that roommate challenges are universal, affecting everyone from young professionals to senior co-living communities. Finally, working through challenges together reinforced the importance of communication, trust, and shared responsibility, the same values Room8 is designed to support.

What's next for Room8

Our roadmap focuses on expanding both functionality and reach.

  • AI-Powered Insights: Smart reminders that learn household patterns and proactively suggest chore rotations or expense settlements
  • Analytics Dashboard: Insights into living patterns, including chore distribution, common conflict triggers, and spending trends
  • University Partnerships: Collaborations with college housing departments to integrate Room8 into campus living and improve student satisfaction
  • Expanded Integrations: Connections with Venmo, Splitwise, and smart home devices for seamless payments and automated chore verification
  • Community Features: A marketplace to find compatible roommates and a forum for sharing tips and solutions
  • Global Expansion: Localization for international markets with sensitivity to cultural norms around shared living
  • Subscription Model: Premium features like unlimited roommates, advanced analytics, and priority support while keeping core features free for students

Room8 is just getting started. We are building the future of harmonious shared living, one household at a time.
