Inspiration
The inspiration behind this project was to help Roni’s Mac Bar, a beloved local spot in College Station, make the most of the data they collect every day. We wanted to create a dashboard that not only offers a closer look at customer preferences and sales but also gives Roni’s team the insights they need to run more efficiently. Supporting local businesses like Roni’s, and making data both accessible and useful, is something we feel strongly about.
What We Learned Throughout this project, we learned a lot about making data meaningful and approachable. Working with real-world data helped us hone our skills in uncovering trends, finding customer favorites, and examining operational efficiency. We also learned how crucial it is to design a dashboard that anyone can use, even if they’re not familiar with data or technical tools. Balancing data depth with usability was a key takeaway that shaped our approach.
How We Built It Data Exploration: First, we dove into the datasets, cleaning and organizing the data to get a clear picture of customer orders, meal prep times, and seasonal trends. This helped us spot popular items, like the “Aggie Bowl,” and identify potential peak times for Roni’s.
Dashboard Design: Using [Tool/Platform], we built an interactive dashboard with three main sections:
Overview: A high-level look at sales, popular items, and efficiency metrics. Customer Insights: Focused on customer favorites, including daily and weekly trends and the best-selling items. Operational Analysis: A section dedicated to meal preparation times, highlighting any bottlenecks and areas for improvement. Adding Forecasts (Optional): We wanted to go a step further by providing Roni’s with some predictive insights, so we used tools like Prophet to create simple forecasts. These projections can help Roni’s plan for peak hours and adjust staffing or inventory accordingly.
User Experience: We prioritized simplicity and ease of use, making sure the dashboard was easy to navigate and intuitive for anyone on Roni’s team.
Challenges We Faced We hit a few bumps along the way:
Data Cleaning: Merging and cleaning the datasets took time, as we handled missing values and standardizing different formats. Balancing Depth and Simplicity: It was tricky to balance offering deep insights without overwhelming users with too much data. We had to carefully choose which visuals and metrics would be most helpful for Roni’s. Predictive Modeling: Making forecasts simple and useful took some fine-tuning, but we focused on presenting the information in a clear, actionable way. Despite these challenges, we’re proud of what we created. We hope the dashboard will be a valuable tool for Roni’s Mac Bar, giving them a clearer picture of their operations and customer preferences.
Conclusion Working on this project has been incredibly rewarding. It’s been a hands-on way to see how data analysis and visualization can support small businesses. We believe the dashboard will help Roni’s make informed decisions, optimize their workflow, and keep serving their customers better every day.
