Inspiration

At the end of 2018, I was diagnosed with a rare neurological disease. Due to my heightened sensitivity, I wasn't able to leave the house or my room, except for doctors appointments and tests. I felt deep social isolation, especially while going through a tough time.

Right now, this disease has changed our lives, for those still living. Being forced to stay at home, losing jobs, and not being able to communicate with loved ones is tough.

I created this application so no one feels alone. Hotlines and chats, just aren't the same as being able to look at someone in the face. Everyone can't afford therapy and many therapists are booked out. So, we can collectively deploy empathy for each other and be there for another person in these unprecedented times.

What it does

The application connects 2 people via Calendly and Zoom. You book a time on Calendly and a Zoom link is created. That Zoom link is made available for both parties.

How I built it

A Calendly integration with Zoom as the default location. And React front-end to set off the Calendly link.

Challenges I ran into

How to create a video chat between two people

How to get the link to both parties (unresolved)

Choosing a domain name

Adoption (unresolved)

Not creating a backend to hold the information for volunteers to vet them (unresolved)

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

Deploying with a domain name for the first time

Creating an application in hours. I started on the last day, unless you count before 9am.

What I learned

I don't have to build everything from scratch. Focus on the problem I'm trying to solve not the technology.

Marketing including writing copy for the website is tough

Adoption will be a rough road

What's next for Rona Connect

Creating a backend to hold the information for volunteers and a vetting process.

Build out more front-end functionality

Gain real users
