Inspiration
Students don't know what skills employers expect, what their existing projects actually prove, or what their next project should be. Resume review tools can find missing keywords and terms, but they cannot help students develop actual skills.
What it does
RoleRider provides IT students with the resources that employers expect through hands-on projects.
- Recommends projects with descriptive steps and resources along each section that will help them learn the skills needed to do each section of the project
- Analyzes the projects in the resume to determine the level of skill the student has and to take it into account when creating projects to build that skill along with learning more skills for the job role
- Provides a certification recommendation after the projects to get certified in the respective aspect of technology
- Uses JSON Web Token to make sure that only the person who owns a resume can access it and helps the backend verify the identity of the person making a request
How we built it
- Framework: React 18 with TypeScript (Strict mode enabled)
- Build Tool: Vite 5
- Styling: Tailwind CSS with custom design tokens and semantic dark/light modes
- Routing: React Router v6
- State Management: Zustand with automatic localStorage synchronization
- Icons: Lucide React
- Visualizations: Recharts (Radar competency benchmarks, horizontal bar distributions)
- Service Layer: Asynchronous, promise-based API abstractions ready for FastAPI backend connection
Challenges we ran into
We had trouble integrating the frontend and backend due to inconsistencies in the file structure. At times, the uploaded PDF did not reflect the student's progress due to problems extracting JSON files from the OpenAI API.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We successfully implemented the OpenAI API to connect the frontend and backend. We also successfully displayed the proper JSON format.
What we learned
We learned that frontend development depends on how accurately the backend server processes the resume. We also learned how to connect the OpenAI API to exchange information between the frontend and backend.
What's next for RoleRider
We can help CS and IT student organizations use RoleRider as a resource to help students in their job search. We can connect with faculty, staff, and advisors to promote RoleRider to students as a tool.
