Inspiration
We were inspired by space classics such as Wing Commander Privateer. Although dated now, the game was near perfect for its time and is still regarded as one of the best games to ever exist. Everything from adventure, to trading, to dogfighting, to sound design captivates players in an immersive space adventure. The game does not tell you how to play, but allows you to create your own adventure. Further inspiration came from web 3 as they allow players to own their in game items; however, when looking at the current web 3 games, we were shocked to see how few were actually playable. We wanted to change that and create the Sci Fi MMO players have been waiting for and give players ownership of their in game items. So we started building, and we led with playable content.
What it does
In the current version of the game, players can select amongst a variety of ships to partake in the mission. Each ship is specialized for a specific role and players must work together to complete the objectives. Players pilot their ships and use a variety of armaments to take down hostiles while collecting loot along the way. You can also apply upgrades to your ship to improve performance and choose among a variety of cosmetics to personalize your ship.
The early access of the game will introduce much more depth to the game. Players will be able to explore an infinite universe, land on different planets, explore their unique biomes, interact within the cities or explore the forgotten ruins, harvest resources, craft items, trade with other players, and build bases and trading outposts.
How we built it
Our designers, game developers, and artists hop into a discord call and the next thing you know a new update is pushed out. It could be magic, or it could be an unimaginable amount of hours spent writing, coding, and crafting.
Challenges we ran into
Building games is never easy. One of the recent challenges we faced was implementing multiplayer into the game. Building the net code was a challenge, but with enough time and effort, our developers were able to have it function!
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are incredibly proud of the fact that anyone can go and play Rogue Star right now. There are many web 3 games out there, but very few actually have playable experiences. Rogue Star is also incredibly accessible to even those who do not understand web 3. Anyone can log in and play Rogue Star and own their digital assets without having to worry about creating a wallet or paying gas fees. We take a lot of pride in how fun and accessible Rogue Star is.
What we learned
We have learned a lot along the way. One of the biggest take always was how different the web 3 community is from the traditional gaming community. Different audiences care about different things and we have to take it into account when building Rogue Star. For example, web 3 gamers may want to use their wallet to log in while a traditional gamer wants to use an email.
What's next for Rogue Star
This is just the beginning for Rogue Star. Bringing the game to early access is the next step for us and there is tons of new content to expect along the way: player avatars, planets, biomes, new ships, ship components, star bases, cities, trading outpost, intricate crafting systems, guilds, bosses, quests, new game modes, and seasonal updates. There are a lot of possibilities for Rogue Star and we can't wait to build the full experience!
