Team Name
We are Team Half'n'Half!
Challenges We Are Responding To
We are aiming to apply for the Best GameDev Hack and the Best Beginner Hack
Inspiration
Our team wanted to tackle the challenge that is boredom. During this time of pandemic and quarantine, many of us have locked ourselves indoors with very little to do, a our team figured that a video-game would be the best way to minimize this boredom.
What it does
Rocketeer is a very simple game where the player needs to avoid asteroids while simultaneously collecting power-ups to try and achieve the highest score possible.
How I built it
Our team primarily developed this game on Intellij-Idea, and it was made entirely in Java. Java is especially practical in Android app development, so we figured it would only make sense to have this made in Java.
Challenges I ran into
One of the major problems our team ran into was time management, which unfortunately took a toll on our ability to complete or project. We know now for future hackathons that back-end programming comes first, and then front-end and UI programming.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Our team member Elizabeth hand drew all of the assets that were used in this project, and we are most proud to have been able to utilize our own assets instead of having to find royalty-free assets.
What I learned
Our team learned a lot about the intricacies of timers and resizing exported images to fit inside of our game.
What's next for Rocketeer
The next step for Rocketeer is to move it onto a handheld platform. Ideally, this game should be a mobile game, and so we would need to adjust the program for a mobile environment.
Attached are some of the assets drawn by our extremely talented Elizabeth!
