Inspiration
I was inspired by how simple the game is. It's something that anyone and basically everyone can play. I felt like it would be perfect for Reddit as it's easy to pick up, and easy to put down I guess.
What it does
The game has 3 "modes". "Create", "Play", and "Results". Create mode allows you to record your moves into a new game "session" then stores them with an associated post for later reference. Play allows other players to click the post you created and play against your recorded moves. Either player winning nets them points, but no points are lost on losses. This is because I felt it wouldn't feel very good to lose points, and that it would be more fair if everyone had equal chance to earn, and stack points. The results mode allows and player's that have completed your game to see how other's faired against your challenge.
How we built it
I built it using Godot, then syncing the game play to Redis. All of the code, art, and design is by myself.
Challenges we ran into
Performance is a huge challenge I ran into. Godot on Reddit is incredibly heavy. Once it loads the game plays alright. There are a few stutters but I already have some ideas for optimization. I just couldn't implement them because there was not enough time. The second challenge was Redis. Redis isn't a slouch, but it definitely has it's hiccups. I struggled to understand the sorted sets, even though they're perfect for Leaderboards. Specifically using range was a hurdle, but I managed.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I completed my second game on Reddit, that in itself is an accomplishment, given that I started kind of late. I'm glad that all of you guys can play it.
What we learned
I learned a lot about the updates Devvit has made over the past few months. A lot of exciting changes. Also learned about Reddit trajectory with Devvit.
What's next for Rock Paper Scissors
I'm excited to continue to update Rock Paper Scissors, but I also want to build more games, now that I understand the limitations of Devvit as it is now.
