Inspiration

My kids have spent years collecting rocks, gems, and crystals. We even used to visit places where you could buy a bucket of dirt and dig through it to find gold dust and other little treasures. It was always such an adventure!

I built this app for anyone who loves exploring and stumbling across cool rocks on their journeys. With the Rock Identifier + GPS Tracker, you can snap a picture to identify your find and automatically save its location—like keeping a digital treasure map of your discoveries.

How we built it

Rock Identifier + GPS Tracking is built with Apple’s SwiftUI, utilizing SwiftData and CloudKit for secure data storage and multi-device syncing.

Using the device's GPS, Rock Identifier automatically records the location of the specimen found and uses MapKit to plot it.

Rock Identifier uses AI to analyze a photo of rocks, stones, minerals, crystals, and gems and return detailed information about the specimen.

For premium features, RevenueCat and RevenueCatUI are used to show the paywall. One of the great features of using RevenueCatUI is to make changes to the paywall from the RevenueCat dashboard, and it’s immediately available to all existing and new users.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge is to get AI to carefully analyze the specimens via a photo, with accuracy, and a lot of time was spent on developing a great AI prompt.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The UX (user experience) is one of the top priorities. You can quickly take a new photo or pick an existing one from your photo album. Metadata is read to obtain the GPS location where the photo of the specimen was taken.

What we learned

It’s very easy to say my app uses AI to identify items, but it’s another thing to actually have accurate results. Being very specific with the AI prompt is extremely important. Nothing is 100% accurate, and Rock Identifier + GPS Tracker returns the confidence level by percentage and description.
