Play the game
Concept
The gameplay is designed to be difficult and unforgiving with physics based mechanics where each jump needs to be timed perfectly in order to be executed correctly. An extra difficulty layer is added where for each wrong answer in a randomly given math test the player gets reset back to the very beginning.
Mechanics
The game is build for one handed gameplay and can be played with only either the mouse or 1 finger. By pressing the action button, a grappling hook shoots out that grabs onto rocks in the level in order to propel your character further.
Theme
The theme of the game is supposed to be literal - while you play you are given math equations. We admit that the idea was put in place just to make our rage platformer even more ragey, because whenever you answer a question wrong, you get sent back to the beginning, but it is still a good way to start doing math quicker in your head.
How we built it
We built the game using the Godot game engine - we didn't use any plugins or premade assets. All of the art was made using Libresprite 16pxx16px tiles The game uses 1 asset that we do not own - a royalty free 8 bit song taken from https://www.fesliyanstudios.com/royalty-free-music/downloads-c/8-bit-music/6 "8 Bit Nostalgia - by David Renda"
Challenges we ran into
As in every hackathon, the time constraint is the biggest challenge. Finding the balance between a polished game and something that is good enough is always an inner struggle. Thankfully we found the balance that we are personally happy with.
What's next
If we decide to continue making the game, there are some things that we would like to change or add to the game
- A polished art style with a unifying color pallet
- Sound design ( SFX and Music )
- Added story and purpose for why the character is there
- Improved physics calculations for smoother player experience
- Level editor with custom questions being an option
- Monetasation strategy for the game
