Inspiration
When was the last time you cleaned your baseboards? Cant remember? That's what we thought. With BaseBot, RoboBot, our design allows users to clean and dust their baseboards with ease.
What it does
Our design has two main features. The first being a vacuum topper that can adjust to the top of the baseboard height and collect the dust into the central vacuum collection. Our design also features a removable cloth around the main body of the BaseBot's case. This allows our robot to clean both the tops and the sides of our baseboards simultaneously.
How we built it
We modified the case to have two rotary actuators, connected to linkages to raise and lower the vacuum topper based on the height of the baseboard. This is done using a sensor and is fully autonomous.
The cloth cleaners around the outside are connected thought a Velcro system that we designed, which allow our uses to simply take them off, wash them, and re-install whenever they need.
We modeled out design using Autodesk Inventor.
Challenges we ran into
The major challenge we faced was to design a component that would add functionality to the pre-existing robotic vacuums while maintaining their current functionality, cleaning floors with a sleek design,
Additionally, we had trouble while designing it because Autodesk doesn't give us an option to design bristles effectively, so we had to tediously design it to ensure we can showcase it. Finally, fitting the whole mechanism while just modifying the lid made it really hard to fit and connect all components together
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of making our design and a product that can benefit many people. There are a lot of individuals who cannot sit on the floor for hours cleaning their baseboards. The BaseBot allows seniors, individuals with motility issues, and busy people to clean with ease. The cloth is a sustainable solution that can be reused many times, allowing our customers to continue using our product over the years. Once the cloth gets past its time, one can simply buy a pack of the cloths instead of the whole case.
What we learned
We developed our understanding and knowledge of CADing using Autodesk inventor. We also realized the importance of brainstorming, because coming up with a good working design made our work a lot easier. This project also taught us the importance of teamwork and collaboration, being able to effectively complete tasks while working in a group while splitting up the tasks to the team can work efficiently, by focusing on each individual's strengths.
What's next for BaseBot
We plan to perfect the flaws in our design by prototyping and iterating repeatedly. We can make it more robust and stable, while integrating the parts more effectively. Additionally, UV light cleaning can also be added to increase functionality.
