Inspiration
Everyone I know is lying to themselves in exactly the same ways.
The gym membership paid for but never used. The Notion dashboard redesigned every Sunday instead of actually doing the tasks on it. The business idea "launching next month" for 14 months straight. The healing era that somehow became a full time personality.
These aren't personal failures — they're universal human experiences that nobody talks about honestly. Every productivity app tells you to do better. Nobody holds up a mirror and says "here's exactly what you're actually doing — and it's kind of hilarious."
I wanted to build that mirror. With a punchline.
The best roasts aren't mean — they're specific. They say the thing everyone already knows but nobody has said out loud yet. That moment of "okay that's actually fair" is more useful than any habit tracker ever built.
What It Does
You describe your daily routine, habits, and life choices. The AI roasts you like a best friend who has watched every Netflix show, scrolled every reel, and has zero filter but genuinely loves you.
🔥 The Roast 4 short punchy observations escalating in intensity — each one targeting something specific you mentioned. No generic advice. Just uncomfortably accurate observations ending in one VERDICT LINE. The kind people screenshot and send to their friends saying "this is literally you."
🎭 Your Netflix/Marvel Character The AI assigns you one character from 60+ options across Friends, The Office, HIMYM, Succession, Fleabag, Marvel MCU, Euphoria, Schitt's Creek, Bojack Horseman, and more — with a one-line roast explanation referencing exactly what you said.
"You are Schmidt from New Girl — you have built four Notion dashboards for a version of yourself that has never once opened Notion."
👥 Your Roast Twin The app finds someone else who got roasted for the exact same chaos pattern. Matched by character assignment and roast category, shown with a Chaotic Match % score.
"You're not the only one. Someone out there got roasted for the exact same thing. We found them."
⚔️ Roast Battles Post an open challenge. Anyone can pick it up. Both players submit one battle line. The entire community votes for 24 hours. Winner by votes. Loser by dignity.
🏆 Chaos Ranks Every roast and battle earns you a rank from 🌱 Fresh Chaos all the way to 🎭 Untreated Main Character.
How We Built It
Built entirely using MeDo through structured multi-turn conversations. No code written manually.
MeDo capabilities used:
- Multi-turn chat — every screen, prompt, and feature refined through iterative conversation with MeDo
- Full-stack generation — complete frontend, backend, and database generated in one build
- Database — two tables:
roast_sessionsstoring roasts, verdicts, characters, and categories;roast_battlesstoring challenge lines, opponent responses, and vote counts - AI integration — custom system prompt engineering for roast generation, character matching, and category tagging
- Deep Build mode — used for complex multi-screen generation with database relationships
- One-click deploy — live public URL instantly
The AI prompt architecture was the real build.
The system prompt includes escalation rules, girl math logic, reel culture references, 60+ character matching rules with specific habit-to-character mappings, a forbidden words list, and a verdict line formula. Getting the AI to say "your 7 Notion dashboards" instead of "your productivity habits" required significant prompt engineering iteration.
The Roast Twin matching logic: Priority 1 → Same character assigned Priority 2 → Same roast category (Avoider/Dreamer/Planner/Snoozer) Priority 3 → Any recent session from last 50 roasts Rule → Never match user with themselves The Battle system runs entirely on database state — open, voting, complete, expired — with 24hr expiry timers and community voting open to everyone, not just the two players.
Challenges We Ran Into
Making the AI actually funny Generic outputs killed the concept early. "You should work on your habits" is not a roast. Getting the AI to reference exact details from user input required building a prompt with explicit bad/good examples, forbidden words, and escalation structure.
Character assignment kept defaulting to wrong characters Early versions assigned the same characters regardless of input. Fixed by adding explicit habit-to-character mapping rules with hard overrides for common patterns.
Parsing AI output into structured sections Splitting the response into ROAST / VERDICT / YOU ARE / RESET for separate UI display broke repeatedly on inconsistent AI formatting. Fixed by enforcing exact headers in the prompt and adding fallback handling for malformed responses.
Voting system not registering Initial voting wasn't recording clicks or preventing double votes. Fixed with session-based deduplication using localStorage IDs verified against the database.
Making the app feel alive on day one An empty Hall of Roasts kills the social energy. Seeded the database with genuine test profiles representing real human chaos patterns before launch.
Accomplishments That We're Proud Of
The roast quality. These are real outputs from the app:
"You don't have a fitness journey. You have a fitness origin story that never leaves the first chapter."
"You're not unlucky in love — you're just a really committed fan of people who haven't bought tickets."
"Your healing era is now your personality and your personality needs its own healing era."
"You fell in love over coriander. That's not a red flag, that's a full salad."
"You've been in pre-production so long the crew has gone home."
These aren't generic AI outputs. They are specific, warm, and accurate — and people are already sending them to friends.
The Roast Twin + Battle system turning a one-time tool into a social platform is what we're most proud of. Nobody comes back to a roast generator. They come back to see if someone accepted their battle challenge.
What We Learned
Prompt engineering is product design. The quality of the roast IS the product. Every hour spent refining the AI prompt — adding escalation rules, forbidden words, specific character matching logic — produced more user value than any UI change.
Specificity is the difference between funny and forgettable. "You should exercise more" lands nowhere. "You haven't run since October but you're training for a half marathon" lands everywhere. The AI only becomes useful when it references exactly what the user said.
Social mechanics change everything. Adding Roast Twin matching and public battles transformed the app from a one-time experience into something people return to. The battle challenge sitting open in the Hall of Roasts creates a loop that a solo roast never could.
MeDo can build faster than you can think. The hardest part wasn't building — it was knowing what to build. MeDo executed every feature described in conversation. The bottleneck was always the idea, never the implementation.
What's Next for ROAST MY LIFE
Personal Dashboard Chaos rank progression, battle history, win/loss record, and your most savage verdict line displayed as a trophy.

Roast My Friend Anonymously submit a friend's habits. The app generates their roast. You send it to them. They either laugh or block you. Both outcomes are valid.
Weekly Chaos Report Your roast patterns over time — are you consistently a Dreamer, an Avoider, or rotating through all categories depending on the week?
Roast Leaderboard Top Chaos Legends ranked by battle wins, most savage verdict lines voted by community, and the Hall of Fame for lines that broke the internet.
