Inspiration

The inspiration for RoamRich came from a common challenge we and our friends faced: wanting to travel but lacking the savings to afford it. We wanted to create a solution that helps people save for their travel goals in a smart and efficient way. This led us to build an app that streamlines savings using AI-powered predictions, making it easier for users to budget, save, and invest toward their dream trips.

What it does

RoamRich helps users save for travel by creating personalized budgets based on historical transactional data. It tracks spending and allows users to round up their purchases to invest the spare change. At the end of the month, any unspent budget is transferred to their savings, helping them reach their goals faster. RoamRich also provides users with AI-driven insights and projections to keep them on track toward achieving their travel aspirations.

How we built it

We built RoamRich using a stack of React Native for the mobile app, Auth0 for authentication, MongoDB for data storage, Express.js and Node.js for the backend, and Perplexity for AI-driven budget predictions. The app connects seamlessly between the front-end and back-end services, providing a smooth user experience.

Challenges we ran into

One of the major challenges we encountered was package compatibility with React Native. We spent several hours debugging and working through technical issues to get the app functioning as intended. Additionally, since we were relatively new to React Native, the learning curve presented its own set of challenges, especially as we aimed to implement complex features like AI predictions and real-time tracking.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of overcoming the technical difficulties we faced with React Native and successfully implementing AI-powered budget predictions. Another key accomplishment was the smooth integration of multiple technologies—Auth0, MongoDB, and Perplexity—into the app, allowing for a cohesive and intuitive user experience. Seeing the app's potential to help users achieve their travel goals has been incredibly rewarding.

What we learned

Throughout the development process, we learned a lot about the importance of iterative design and development. We gained a deeper understanding of how to manage project scope and prioritize key features to deliver a functional product within a limited timeframe. Additionally, we improved our debugging skills and became more adept at integrating various technologies to build a complete application.

What's next for RoamRich

In the future, we plan to add more features to RoamRich, including the ability to set multiple savings goals beyond just travel. We also aim to introduce a subscription service that offers personalized credit card recommendations based on users' spending habits, budget, and goals, helping them maximize rewards. Additionally, we plan to expand investment opportunities within the app, providing users with more creative and tailored options to grow their savings.
