Inspiration

Van life is freedom, but it can also be isolating. You meet amazing people on the road, then you split a few days later and you might never cross paths again. For solo travelers, there is also a real safety gap when meeting strangers from the internet.

Driftmate started as a simple question: what would a connection app look like if it was built for nomads, by nomads, and optimized for the reality that everyone is moving?

What Driftmate Does

Driftmate is an invite-only community app for van lifers and nomads with three modes:

  • Dating: swipe-based matching, but focused on people you can actually meet (your paths cross soon).
  • Friends: find activity buddies (climbing, hiking, skiing, surfing, etc.) based on interests and skill level.
  • Builder: connect with experienced van builders for community help with electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and repairs.

Trust, Reputation, And Safety

We built Driftmate around accountability and real-world trust signals:

  • Invite-only access to keep the community high-trust and discourage bad actors.
  • Kudos (post-interaction appreciation) and Vouch (IRL verification) to make reputation visible and earned.
  • A check-in safety system so meetups can be shared with trusted contacts.

RevenueCat + Monetization

RevenueCat powers subscriptions and feature gating (entitlements + paywall). Premium features make the experience better (route matching, expanded matching, etc.) without putting core safety features behind a paywall.

How We Built It

  • Flutter app (iOS + Android) with flutter_bloc and go_router.
  • Firebase backend (Auth, Firestore, Storage, Cloud Functions, FCM) for realtime profiles + chat.
  • Route matching that compares upcoming destinations and surfaces “your paths cross” moments.
  • Mapbox for maps and location-based discovery.
  • Cloud Functions enforce key trust logic server-side (so kudos/vouch counters and limits can't be easily gamed).

Challenges And What We Learned

  • Designing “trust” features that feel human, are hard to game, and still work with a lightweight mobile UX.
  • Modeling route data so Firestore queries stay fast while still supporting “paths cross soon” matching.
  • Making subscription gating feel fair: safety is always free, premium unlocks convenience and power.
  • Integrating RevenueCat cleanly across iOS/Android with a predictable entitlement model and restore flow.
