What it does

Inspiration

Car ownership is full of small but important responsibilities: maintenance, mileage, registration, insurance, recalls, service records, documents, costs, and emergency information. Most drivers manage these across notes, paper files, emails, spreadsheets, and memory.

I built RoadReady to bring all of that into one simple, privacy-conscious mobile experience — so drivers can spend less time managing their vehicle and more time driving it.

What it does

RoadReady is an all-in-one vehicle ownership companion for iPhone.

Users can:

  • Add vehicles by scanning or entering a VIN
  • Track mileage and maintenance schedules
  • Log service history, fuel and ownership costs
  • Store and scan vehicle documents
  • Monitor registration, insurance and inspection renewals
  • Check NHTSA recall campaigns
  • Track warranties, tires and batteries
  • Complete pre-trip and seasonal checklists
  • Access an Emergency Glovebox with important vehicle information
  • Generate vehicle history and ownership reports
  • Use widgets and Siri Shortcuts
  • Share selected vehicle information with family through Family Garage

RoadReady also includes a free tier, while RoadReady+ unlocks advanced features such as additional vehicles, expanded reminders, document tools, analytics and sharing capabilities.

How I built it

RoadReady is a native iOS application built primarily with Swift and SwiftUI.

Vehicle information is decoded using the NHTSA vPIC API, while recall campaign information is retrieved from NHTSA's recall data services.

The core vehicle database uses SwiftData and remains private on the user's device. CloudKit powers Family Garage sharing, allowing users to selectively share vehicle information with other iCloud users without turning the app into a cloud-first data store.

RoadReady also integrates Apple technologies including:

  • StoreKit 2 for subscriptions
  • WidgetKit for Home Screen widgets
  • App Intents and Siri Shortcuts
  • UserNotifications for local reminders and recall alerts
  • VisionKit and Vision for document capture and OCR
  • EventKit for adding eligible dates to Calendar
  • CloudKit sharing
  • SwiftData for local persistence

Representative vehicle imagery is retrieved through a secure server-side API architecture so third-party API credentials are never included in the iOS app.

Challenges

One of the biggest challenges was designing RoadReady so that it could offer powerful functionality without unnecessarily moving sensitive vehicle information into the cloud.

VINs, document content, insurance information and other private data are deliberately kept local wherever possible. Family Garage therefore required a selective CloudKit architecture where only explicitly chosen categories are shared.

Another challenge was handling vehicle recall data accurately. NHTSA recall results are based on year, make and model rather than confirming an unresolved recall against a specific VIN, so RoadReady was designed to communicate this limitation clearly instead of presenting uncertain information as fact.

Building a reliable notification system was also important. RoadReady reconciles reminders when dates, maintenance schedules or user preferences change, while avoiding duplicate or stale notifications.

Accomplishments

I'm particularly proud that RoadReady has grown into a complete vehicle ownership platform rather than simply a maintenance tracker.

The finished product combines vehicle management, safety, costs, documents, reminders, emergency information, Apple integrations and secure family sharing in a cohesive native iOS experience.

The application also includes extensive automated testing across its data, notification, subscription, privacy, sharing and UI architecture.

What I learned

Building RoadReady reinforced how important product decisions are when working with personal data.

Not every feature needs a server, not every piece of information needs to sync, and convenience should not come at the expense of privacy or transparency.

I also learned a great deal about CloudKit sharing, StoreKit subscriptions, SwiftData persistence, background tasks, widgets, App Intents and designing a large SwiftUI application around reusable services rather than screen-specific logic.

What's next

The next stage for RoadReady is expanding the intelligence around vehicle ownership while keeping the same privacy-first philosophy.

Future opportunities include richer maintenance insights, additional vehicle data sources, improved ownership analytics, broader Family Garage collaboration and more automation around the everyday tasks of owning a vehicle.
