Inspiration
As students enter college, many are confused and don’t know how to proceed in their desired major. This includes students trying to know what classes, clubs/organizations, or internships that they can look into or apply. To combat this, we wanted to make sure to create a simple and efficient way to help students go through this tedious and confusing process.
What it does
This website tailors to students that want to look at what the future holds for them. The website takes in simple information from the students in the main page such as name, year of graduation, field of study, and clubs/organizations. This data is taken and is outputted with the future classes, clubs, and internships the student can look into. This can be very beneficial to incoming and curious students making a confusing concept much simpler to understand.
How we built it
For this project our group made a full stack efficient web application with full front and back end components. The main project was run using VS code developed by Microsoft, this allowed us to write our code in correct syntax, debugging, and code compilation. Within this project we used React, a javascript library that is used for building user interfaces. Ensuring us to create our web application by using UI and other components. We also implemented nodejs which allowed us to make sure we could run our backend libraries. This overall compiled into our accessible web application made to help others.
Challenges we ran into
While trying to accomplish the project, we ran into a few issues. As is it our first time creating a website using React and Javascript understanding the new languages was a learning curve that we had to overcome. In addition, trying to get our backend server to launch and be compatible with our frontend was our biggest challenge as we ran into network errors and our data not being able to communicate within the two ends.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of many components of our project, specifically our UI interface and making our web application a successful full stack. The UI interface we built is one of our favorite parts of this project because of the aesthetic and accessible view it has. It provides a seemingless experience of the web application and makes sure that it is consistent at all times. While it was tedious to work on, it provided us with the flexibility to make it something that we would like and what the students can experience first hand. Another component we are proud of was the successful connection of the front and back end. This was our most difficult process, but getting the front and back end connecting was one of the best accomplishments we are proud of. Making a full stack web application allowed us to learn and communicate with each other to make this process enjoyable and welcoming learning experience.
What we learned
Over the course of this project we learned a variety of skills. While it was some of our first time doing any sort of web development, some of us learned the basics of HTML and CSS while the rest learned the basics of React and Javascript. We also learned about full stack development and how we could set up a front and backend that supports what we want. With this knowledge we can build on what we know to create passion projects or even support company challenges.
What's next for Roadmap to Success
In terms of our next steps, we are going to add functionality for other majors and provide them with a roadmap that fits them and their interests. We will also try to avoid repeating interests and clubs if the user already entered that as well as try to incorporate linkedins API so the user directly gets a list of jobs instead of getting a link to a linkedin search.
