RoadBip
Inspiration
Road safety is a serious issue in Portugal. In 2024, Portugal led Europe in road insecurity, with nearly 135,000 accidents and 453 deaths recorded this year.

Many accidents result from driver fatigue, distraction, speeding, and impaired driving. RoadBip was created to help reduce road accident casualties by detecting irregular driving behaviors and alerting drivers before an accident occurs. If the app detects signs of fatigue, distraction, or dangerous driving, it can warn the driver and recommend stopping to prevent an accident.
What it does
RoadBip is an AI-powered app designed to monitor and analyze driving behaviors to enhance road safety. It detects:
- Speeding
- Mobile phone use while driving
- Fatigue and lack of attention
- Impaired driving (e.g., alcohol consumption)
In case of accident, RoadBip can automatically alert emergency services (112), reducing response time and potentially saving lives.
Unlike built-in car safety systems available in modern vehicles, RoadBip is compatible with all cars, including older models (1980s-2000s), making advanced safety features more accessible.
How we built it
We developed RoadBip using:
- Machine Learning to detect irregular driving patterns.
- Sensor Data Analysis using smartphone accelerometers and GPS.
- Cloud Computing to process real-time driving behavior data.
- Mobile App Development for user-friendly notifications and alerts.
Our focus is on creating a lightweight and accessible solution that doesn’t require integration with a car’s built-in system, making it easier for any driver to use.
Challenges we ran into
Developing RoadBip came with several challenges:
- Ensuring accurate detection of risky behaviors
- Overcoming driver resistance – Some people may see it as intrusive rather than helpful.
- Continuous updates and improvements to adapt to new risks.
- Balancing privacy concerns while collecting necessary driving data.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Creating a universal road safety solution that works for all vehicles.
- Successfully integrating AI-based detection of unsafe driving habits.
- Designing a user-friendly and accessible app for real-time driver alerts.
- Aligning with UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by contributing to safer roads.
What we learned
Throughout the development process, we gained insights into:
- AI applications in road safety
- Data-driven risk assessment in driving behavior
- User psychology and resistance to safety technology
- Regulatory challenges and data privacy concerns
What's next for RoadBip
We aim to expand RoadBip by:
- Partnering with insurance companies and transportation businesses to encourage adoption.
- Exploring government incentives to promote safer driving.
- Improving AI models for even more accurate detection.
- Developing an advanced premium version with additional safety features.
By making cutting-edge road safety accessible to all drivers, we hope to contribute to a future with fewer road accidents and safer driving habits.
