Inspiration

Did you know that in most states, 35-55% of people fail their permit test on the first try? Furthermore, many people simply memorize the phrases, and then forget everything by the time they actually have to drive. Its no wonder, when you look at the long, tedious manual presented as study material, that students have trouble reviewing the whole thing effectively. However, this is incredibly dangerous. Every year, 31,720 people die from car crashes. Our goal with this project was to create a well designed, choose your own adventure style game that would help high schoolers stay safe on the road by practicing laws in a fun and effective manner, one of which they lack with current technologies.

Our Game

The project we ended with throws you into the exciting scenario of returning from a dangerous heist, and needing to use your driving skills and knowledge to evade the police and escape back to the base. The player is thrown into various common scenarios appearing on the drivers test, and will have to make a quick decision about what to do. The game offers feedback for responses that are incorrect, helping students learn from their mistakes to correct them in the future. All the code was compiled on replit, in the languages of CSS and HTML. The art and animations were all also completed by hand, allowing us to create them to our own situations and premise of the game. Throughout this process we were able to better lean about HTML/CSS and applying it to a game design.

Challenges

In the span of the 24 hours, there were bound to be challenges which we would end up facing. As we drew everything by hand, a part of the struggle came from this, the time it took to draw every background with the specific props was not ideal, as well as the fact that this was a video game style project, with a storyline that needed time to craft, we were faced with a wall of unforeseen and the least to say annoying circumstances. To get through this wall, quickly and efficiently, we split the work throughout the project so we could focus on our strengths, whether that be design, code, or writing!

Future Improvements

What we have today is simply a working prototype, meaning with the multitude of ideas we still have for this game we hope to create a truly useful study tool for our peers and anybody struggling with the drivers exam. On future renditions of Road Run, we wish to create more levels. The scenario presented today is at an intermediate difficulty, with uncommon traffic signs. We wish to let the player pick a certain destination, each with their own difficulty, and let the player get more practice with different types of signs and situations as well. Difficulty levels will vary in length and easiness of questions and road signs. We also aspire to implement a sort of timing system, forcing the player to quickly make decisions, replicating real life situations in a fun way.
