Inspiration
RoadRace was inspired by the excitement of classic arcade racing games where quick reflexes and precision driving matter more than complex controls. We wanted to create a game that anyone could pick up and enjoy within seconds while still offering enough challenge to keep players coming back to improve their scores.
What it does
RoadRace is a fast-paced arcade racing game where players dodge traffic, avoid obstacles, and race as far as possible while collecting points and power-ups. As the game progresses, the speed increases, making every second more challenging. Players can compete for high scores and continuously improve their driving skills. Features: Endless racing gameplay Increasing difficulty Smooth controls High score tracking Dynamic obstacles Fast and responsive gameplay
How we built it
Frontend: React 19, HTML5 Canvas 2D engine, Tailwind CSS, Vite. Backend: Node.js serverless runtime (Devvit), Hono framework router. Database: Devvit Redis Client (maintains global high scores, leaderboards, and user stat profiles). Audio Synthesizer: Web Audio API oscillator pipes (generates retro synthwave background loops, dynamic engine sounds that shift pitch with speed, and sound effects dynamically without downloading static mp3s).
Challenges we ran into
Some of the biggest challenges included: Making the controls feel smooth and responsive. Balancing the game's difficulty so it remains fun instead of frustrating. Optimizing performance while rendering moving traffic and obstacles. Implementing accurate collision detection. Keeping gameplay engaging despite its simple mechanics.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud that we successfully built: A fun and addictive arcade racing experience. Smooth gameplay with responsive controls. A progressively challenging difficulty system. Clean and attractive game visuals. An experience that encourages players to keep trying for a better score. Most importantly, RoadRace is easy to learn but difficult to master.
What we learned
During development, we learned: How to design addictive gameplay loops. The importance of balancing speed and difficulty. Techniques for optimizing browser-based games. Better approaches to collision detection and animation. How small visual and sound effects greatly improve player engagement.
What's next for ROAD RACE
Our future roadmap includes:
Online leaderboard, Multiplayer racing mode, Unlockable vehicles, Vehicle customization, Nitro boosts and power-ups, Dynamic weather (rain, fog, night mode), Multiple tracks and environments, Improved sound effects and background music, Mobile app release (Android & iOS), Controller support, Achievements and daily challenges, Global tournaments and seasonal events.
Our goal is to transform ROAD RACE from a simple arcade game into a competitive racing experience that players can enjoy anytime, anywhere.
